    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message.   • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Spline replacement question

So I'm working on an 82 GS1100G right now. After reading about the spline issue with this year bike, I was able to get a new/used spline out of a 1979 GS850. However...

The 82 spline has a ridge around it's edge and a two piece washer to bolt it to the rear wheel.

The 79 spline has no ridge around it's edge and a one piece washer.

The picture below shows the ridge in the 82 spline with it's 2 piece washer and next to it you can barely see the 79 spline with no ridge and it has a single piece washer.

My question is: I am assuming, and I hate to do that, that I need to get new, single piece washers for the 79 spline and use those to install the 79 spline into the 82 rear wheel? Right?
 
Your '79 spline is one of the early ones that was recalled.
 
Recalled? Really? So I went to all this trouble for nothing? I thought any year before 1982 would be a good spline. Rats!
 
What was the issues with the 79 spline? This one looks near perfect.
 
The nuts that retain the studs could loosen and cause the rear wheel to lockup if they got wedged between another stud and the wheel.

There were two different methods of retaining the rear spline. The early (recalled) used a plate the sat on top of the hub and the newer used a retaining plate which fit into a groove in the hub, like what was originally on your '82 GS1100G. You must use the proper retainers required for each different type spline.

I've made them out of flat stock so that I could use the recalled spline in a pinch. You need make sure the retainers you make don't hit anything when the hub 'rocks' back and forth taking up the drive line 'shock'.

AND you need the ensure the nut can't come loose by either welding the nuts in place, drilling and safety wiring the nuts or red locktite and torqued properly.

I hear you Rustybronco! I won't use this spline at all. I'll start looking for another one asap. You know, I was kind of surprised when I took the bolts off of the 79 spline and it seemed as if they were nowhere near as tight as the ones on the 82.

So I guess I'm left with looking for a 1980 and 1981 spline? According to alpha sports, a 1980 ...850 and 1000 should work. As well as a 1981 ...650, 850 and 1000.

Sound about right? Any help is appreciated and I thank you guys for alerting me to this problem. I guess I just missed the 79 recall postings.
 
Any 80~up GS850~1000~1100 shaft drive spline will work. There may be other applications the will as well. Just be on the lookout for the 'gold coloured spline it's the soft one.

If in doubt, ask... :)

It's easiest to just buy a new one.

Maybe not cheapest, but definitely easier and very likely faster than haunting fleaBay and squinting at crappy photos.

They're about $130 nowadays.

Read these threads above and you will learn that Dale IS USING one of those '79 splines. He's a smart guy and knows how to set it up safely (welding the nuts I presume). I wouldn't give up on the spline just yet, just be smart. The problem with this model spline is the nuts would come loose. Make sure they don't get a chance and you should be okay.

Thanks for the input bwringer. $130 is a bit more than I want to pay for a spline. Not that I'm cheap, it's just I feel a little more invested if I can find one and do it myself. But it may come to that. And you're right about squinting at pictures on ebay. I've already done that and it looks like I'd be putting my trust in a stranger going that route.

Nessism, my son the welder has moved across the state and it may be a while before that could get done. I'm going to look for a while and see if I can find something that will work. I've posted in the Parts Wanted section.
