    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Sprocket carrier question

I searched, and could not come up with the answer I need in any of the existing threads. I'm trying to fit a '92 Katana wheel into the stock swingarm of my '79 1000E with a 530 x-ring chain, and actually have everything line up properly. As it stands, I need to bring the rear sprocket in 15/32" toward the wheel to make the chain straight. I already have the sprocket flipped around to offset inward.

Before I do something stupid: i.e. unnecessary machining of my carrier, does anyone know of a 5-lug carrier that is narrower than the ones found on a '92 katana 750? I haven't found a 500E to measure, and it looks like the one on my '86 GSXR is the same, or possibly wider than the kat one.

If someone else better at searching can point me to the thread I overlooked, that would be awesome, too. :D
 
For such a small misalignment its probably easier & cheaper to space the front sprocket out by the required amount :D

I have done the Kosman 5/8 off set you had to remove reshape reweld the area of the frame for chain clearence . I would have too see the 3/8 off set . I would go with a custom made spacer to move the rear sprocket out and small one for the front . it would look like double lipped spacer . One lip for the carrier one for th sprocket too ride on . any machine shop could handle that .

I would, except I can only gain about 1/4" without going to an offset sprocket, and the offset sprocket would have the chain fouling the shock before I could gain enough. :(

I'll probably just take 1/8" off the carrier, and another 1/16-3/32" off the back of the sprocket (it's pretty beefy) when I can beg use of a big lathe, and space my standard front sprocket out as far as it will go. I was just hoping there might be a different carrier that might do the work for me, since the current one already holds the chain about 3/4" out from the tire. :D

Unfortunately I need to move the chain _in_, so that won't work.

I suppose I could try to find a sprocket made for a carrier larger in diameter than the one I have, and make a plate to mount to the existing carrier and bolt the sprocket to the back of that, but that's a bit more involved than it probably needs to be.
 
Do some more measuring. Use a straight edge or a laser pointer. I'd be surprised if the 3/8 offset sprocket did not get you the clearance you need.

I must be blind...I'm not seeing offset rear sprockets at the kosman site.

I guess it doesn't matter either way, I've borrowed some lathe time tonight already, so I'll get the problem solved that way. :)
