A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

the bike a 1985 GS700e, 4 to 1 exhaust and uni pods and stage 3 kit.

Problem dead spot when cruising, not in hard driving between 2.5 and 3 grand.

Intial attempt at solution I raised e-clips 1 step no significant improvement but did move the problem to lower RPM,

Question Do I just keep raising the e-clips or do I consider this the best I can do.

Positive When getting on this bike it REALLY FLYS.

Thanks

I think you changed the wrong thing.....

so it runs fine if you open it up a bit in that RPM range, but it is flat if you are just cruising along at a steady speed? Moving the clips to raise the needles is more to adjust mixture when the throttles are partway open, like 1/5 throttle up to 3/4. The pilot jet controls mixture below that. Main jet controls mixture at wide open throttle.
I think it is your pilot jets that need to be richened up, or perhaps something is blocked up in the pilot jet circuit?
There are some pretty good instructions online about rejetting your carbs, unfortunately I cant find them right now.

I'm used to mikuni flat slide carbs. on those you would actually lower the clip to bring the needle up higher and allow more fuel in. Reading your post it seemed like you were going the other way. Of course that could just be the difference in carbs.

Agree. You should be raising the needle to richen the midrange. You may also need to slightly richen the pilots. Now do some plug chops, at various rpms.

I checked the plugs and found them black and sooty, I moved the e-clips up a notch and things seem to be improving it is also the first time I have had a plug reading and had anything but black plugs.

Now when I rap it out it does great but if I am driving along in 5th at 70 it struggles to move past 70 mph. If I just accelerate I can clear 80 in 4th gear without effort. I know I need to do a plug chop at 70 in 5th gear and see what I get but I am thinking I outta synch these carbs with the mercury tubes before I mess with the jetting again. I have not synched them since the stage 3 kit and I am not all that confident in the last job I did as the carbs were pretty much a mess.

Unless it's running rough at lower rpms/idle leave the vacuum sync until after you've sorted the jetting.
Even though you think it's running great in the top revs, do a plug chop and compare all 4 plugs. If they aren't a dark tan colour, you need to change to a leaner main jet. If you dont get the mains right, it will affect the position that you need to run the needle height for a clean midrange.
Once you have these right you can fine tune for clean idle and vacuum sync.

I probably won't get a chance to mess with it until the week end but if the weather is kind I am on it
