Stainless carb bolts

Forum Mentor
I thought I'd post this since people have had trouble with one of the few suppliers of stainless steel carb bolts recently.

I went to my local Fastenal Store today and bought 50 stainless hex head bolts and 100 stainless washers for $16.63. You only need 28 bolts for a rack of VM carbs, so this is almost twice as many as you need. I don't mind having extra around, especially since it is only a couple bucks more than ebay. By comparison, they are about $13.00 on ebay for 28.

You can buy them individually for 35 cents a piece too.

Here is the Fastenal part numbers:
Bolt M4-0.7 x 16mm DIN 912 A2 18-8 S/S Socket Head Cap Screw - Part # MS2530016A20000
Washer M4 DIN 127 A2 S/S 18-8 Split Lock Washer Part #ML6340000A20000

There are 2000 or so Fastenal stores in the US, so one is probably close by.

YMMV, depending on where you are. The Fastenals near me never have any metric stuff. I have no idea why.

McMaster-Carr and Bolt Depot are excellent online sources for stainless goodies as well, at much better prices:

If you're really in a hurry for just a few fasteners, Ace and Do It Best hardware stores usually have an OK selection at eye-watering prices. The big box home improvement stores carry very little metric stuff at all, and no stainless metric allen heads.

I checked McMaster-Carr.. Price is much cheaper $7.37 for 100 pack.
I was thinking of being able to just go out and buy this kind of stuff when you need it.
I'm pretty happy to find the Fastenal store because nobody else around here carries much in the way of metric, let alone stainless.
I get tired of ordering everything and waiting for it to show up.

For any Brits who haven't already clicked on it, Screwfix is the place to go for these - ?2.10 for 50. Only thing is you need to make your order up to ?50 to get the free delivery. (treat the missus to a new drill perhaps?)

Anyone have a link? Or exactly what kind of bolts are needed

Ive been looking for a Fastenal around here. I feel almost positive ive seen one recently. They carry the stainless stuff im looking for to do my seat cover with....

Exactly which ones you need depends on your carbs, but generally they're 5mmX12, 5X16, or 4X16 for the float bowls and carb tops. The correct term for what you seek are "stainless steel socket head cap screws".

You're best off to measure samples of the screws in your carbs or check a fiche with real Suzuki part numbers. Often, the diameter and length are embedded in the last half of the part number, for example: -0512xx would be 5mm thread diameter X 12mm thread length. (You do not include the head when measuring screw length -- the dimensions are the diameter and length of the threads.)

You can also replace the screws holding the carbs to their brackets as well. Again, measuring a sample is normally the best way, unless you suspect that they have been monkeyed with.

Just make sure to use some ant-seize compound on every bolt as you replace them.

I got mine from both Bolt Depot and a set from , ummm, the guy that sells seal rings and bolts. (see what happens when u get old? you get fer-get-full) You'll need bolts for the rail mounting, 4 per carb, float bowl, 4 per carb and 4 for the top end. If I recall, the ones for the rail are 5mmx16mm. All the rest should be 4mm, and you can use either 12mm or 16mm length. The ones I got from Bolt Depot are allen head. MUCH better than slotted or phillips head, and classier than hex head.

No one knows what kind of bolts im looking for?
That's correct.

And if anyone would know off the top of his head, it's Bwringer :-D.

Post your carb info - maybe you'll get lucky and someone's got the same carbs, already figured out the bolt sizes, and has a list to post. Barring that, you've got to measure yours.

If you don't know which carbs you have, post the year and model of your bike. Someone will be able to tell you what the stock carbs are for that model.

Side note - putting bike info (model/year) in your signature will save you typing it into every post.

liloaty, that's the correct size screw you'll need only assuming you have VM carbs (usually the 1979 and earlier models), since you're still keeping absolutely secret WHAT FREAKING KIND OF BIKE YOU HAVE?????????

*pant* *gasp* *choke*

Now then:
if you have BS carbs (these are the CV carbs generally found on 1980+ models and the earlier GS400 models), you'll need 5mm diameter screws, usually 5X16 for the bowls and 5X12 or 5X14 for the carb tops. You can usually go ahead and use 5X16 on the carb tops, but there might be one or two where they stick out too far and interfere with something.

1980 GS1100e. Thanks for the update! I will add my bike to my sig soon. BUT the bike has 91 GSXR1100 carbs. Any ideas?

The '91 GSXR1100 came with Mikuni RS 40mm Flat Sides.

Pretty different from the racks most of us are running, though the float bowls look similar. Couldn't find the info on bolts, though.

These are 36mm CV's. You sure all 91's came with RS 40mm, or do I have my year wrong?

Well, one of us is :-D, but I'm more skilled at searching the internet than identifying carbs, so I'm not too confident. Here's one of the links I found. Based on that info '89-90 had 36mm and they went to 40mm in '91.
