A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hi,

I am new to motorcycles and just bought my first bike last night. A 1982 GS650GL. It is :Dawesome!:D I don't know a lot about motorcycles so I have a lot to learn. This bike has one small issue I need to get fixed-

It starts right up. the only problem is is that it is missing the button to start it. For now, I have to stick a piece of tin foil in the hole where the button used to be. After a google search I am still a bit confused on the piece I need. I found something called a :confused:Solenoid:confused: and I believe it is the right piece. I would love to be sure by getting some help from this forum.

Thanks!
Charlie

Go to one of the internet Suzuki suppliers, look it up in the parts diagrams. It's not the solenoid.
I may have that switch from a parts bike a while ago if you can't get just the button..

look for a second hand switch gear assembly, either on ebay or a local breakers yard if you have one, then either fit that if it is in good condition or swap over the bits you need to your switch gear.

Don't worry - fix the button and the bike will find other stuff for you to do! The button should be findable- though you might have to scoop an entire right switch assembly and go exploring!

Welcome, Charlie, to GSR.

Have you tried to see if you can fashion something else to reach in there and push the contact together, something that can stay there?

Look on ebayu for someone parting out a 650G or 650GL and selling the entire right handle bar control unit (kill switch and start button).

I say 650G or 6t50GL.
On mosty all other models things like that are interchangeable. But I understand that the 650s have many things that are not intercvhangable with say, 550s or 1100 ectera.
So, I say 650G or 650GL just to be safe. Maybe others have more specific knowolodge about this particular part.

But I would think that if it looks like yours, it will fit.
Also follow your wiring to find the connector so you know what that looks like.

You are not going to find just the button.

No, only when previous owners do something stupid to them.

Sometimes the switch contacts get dirty, sometimes the buttons get stuck, sometimes the spring rusts through, but they don't normally just fall off.
