DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hello guys,

Just been quoted ?570.06 (or a lot of dollars) for a new starter motor from my local dealer (superceded new part #3110049050000 / original part #31104904000) thats TOOOOOO expensive.

Have removed and opened the motor and one bush has worn due to the holding plate (bakerlite ?) breaking at the rivet point.

Are there any alternative motors from other models that can be used or is going to be a reconditioning option or salvage yard / ebay ?

Thanks for looking.

Starter motors are dime a dozen. Lots of different GS's shared the same motor so the pool of supply is large. I also think you can still buy rebuild parts like brushes so you might want to check some of the on-line parts houses for parts availability too.

Good luck

Thanks mate.

Thanks mate.

Wow......

How right you where, picking one up tomorrow for ?30 (not a lot of dollar).

Thanks for the help, sure I'll need more guidance later, its good to know you folks are about.

Cheers

Tris,

Welcome to GSR.

Yes, lots will swapp out the same.

Some other comments:
- some starter motors are 2 brush and some are 4 brush. Some are Mutsui (or something like that) and others are different manufacture (NipponGinsu or something). Same model/year of bike may have either.
- if you want a rebuild kit you will have to see if you have the two brush or the 4 brush (and you have already seen that). Some rebuild kits have just the brushes, and others have the entire plate with the brushholders (and you have to resolder the connections).
- if you look at some source of rebuilt starter motors (like Stocker) and see a list of what starter fits what year/model. that will be a good referernce for you. Although that may be too limiting, because the starter from about any GS will do.
- if the one you get seem like the mounting tabs are correct but the cable connector is pointing in wrong direction (sometimes called wrong "clock" around here, because is at say 8 oclock not say 2 oclock), dont let that bother you too much. Maybe can Take the end cap off and put it back on in other "clock" position.

4 brush, ah, Mitsuba
