A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hi..
Have a 80 GS550 with 10k miles.I am getting apx 12 volts at the starter but it is dead. The engine is not seized . Last fall I was using the starter for 10 sec(maybe more) stretches trying to start the bike. Did I cook the starter , is it repairable or is it e-bay time?:o

Do a search on here for replacing/repairing the brushes in it. I remember seeing a few threads on the subject

The starter can't be toast after only 10k miles unless something drastic happened such as it filled up with water or someone hooked up the electrical wrong.

I suggest you jump the starter solenoid to see if the starter will turn. You can remove the starter pretty easily so maybe test after it's out of the bike if all else fails.

The starter needs more than just the presence of 12 volts to run. :-k

Yep, it needs someplace for it to go, too. Check the starter mounting bolts to make sure they are tight. They are the ground connection to the engine. :D

.

If it is the starter try stockers.com for rebuild kits.
Or try me, as I have a pristine starter motor (31100-47010 ), that needs somewhere to go. But I doubt at that mileage the starter is gone, unless it has sat in a puddle!

Um, guys

Probably a dead battery

What voltage are you getting at the battery when you depress the starter button?

Tough crowd here:-)... I first thought of the battery and the the starter relay but I have the following readings.
Battery 13.1 Volts
At relay 13.1 Volts
At starter 11.8 Volts with starter switch engaged.
Now I am wondering if I cooked the starter trying to start it. How hard is it to cook the starter.
Thanks All
Geo

You'll have to pull the starter and see what it looks like inside to see if it's cooked. Maybe a bad connection or a magnet fell off

Fortunately, used and rebuilt starters are plentiful

Also, pull off the starter relay and clean it out. Too much voltage drop there
