    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

starter clutch / stator everything back together

now it wont start.....ahhhhhhhhhhhh

hit the starter and the motor turns over one turn at a time
checked voltage and conected spare battery
pulled starter motor out and when connected to power and earthed spins freely
I thought maybe a bad earth so I made up a 30amp cable and fitted it to the back of the starter motor and straight to the earth terminal and the motor spins appears strong.
refitted the starter motor
first hit as a test everything spins well
go to start it and back to on turn every time I hit the starter motor.

I must be me ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh..time to drink
 
I'd pull the generator cover off and check on the assembly of the starter clutch and the gearing between the starter gear and starter clutch. Make sure you have left no thrust washers out on reassembly. With the cover off you should be able to turn the large gear between the rotor and the engine bearing in one direction with no resistance and it should not turn in the other direction. Get back to us if you have no luck.

thats better had dinner and couple of drinks

before i put the cover on i checked that everything was working ok
the stater clutch engaged one way and not the other

try again tomorrow

Pulled it all apart looked at it put it back togeather and it started.

I noticed there were no thrust washers, I will order a couple tomorrow.

Takes a bit to start but once its been started for the day she fires up with the lightest touch of the starter.

Is there a starting trick with these like full choke / 1/2 choke / no choke?

Felt good to go for a ride again and I am going again later this arvo

Not charging so that the next job on the agenda.
(for the moment carrying the jumper leads and riding during daylight hours)

Craig. Starting procedure. Full choke, no throttle, let it idle on full choke until the revs rise, back off the choke a bit to reduce revs and so on. When choke is off its OK to use throttle.
 
Sounds like something (one of the shafts) was binding when you tightened up the generator cover.

Check thrust washers nos. 3 & 10 on diagram.

RE Start: Thanks....I will try the full choke start tomorrow.

Thrust washes: Nos 10 looks ok but there are no number 3,s
I will have to oder a couple.

Since I blocked all the gaps in the air box up it runs beautifully no hesitation no flat spots it just wants to go.

Don: This morning (a cold winters morning on the Gold Coast) I tried the full choke start and she burst into life at the first touch...woo hoo first time its ever started like that since I had her.
The choke cable was a bit crappy and wasnt pulling the choke completely on so I grabed the choke rail with my fingers and pulled it all the way across.
I was telling a mate and he told me he bought a brand new honda 750 4 in the early seventies. He came out of the pub and it wouldnt start.
Being in Sydney he didnt want to leave it there so he sat there all night in the dead of winter until the next morning when someone from the bike shop came out and pulled the choke on and it started first touch.
