A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Here's my story, my first bike is an 82 gs850gl. I had it a few years ago from my bro, rode it a summer and it needed a lot more work than I could afford. So I gave it back, he didn't make it home. The bike died on the road, so it's been sitting for about 2 years. I think it's the stator. I recently got the bike back, cleaned the carbs and am charging the battery. It won't fire though, and spark is real weak.
If the stator is bad will the bike not even fire?
Is there a way to check this so I don't throw money at it when it doesn't need it?
Also how hard is it to rewind the stator based on the how to link posted on the site?

Ok, after jumping the bike it runs. So that would most likely be my stator right?

Could be the battery is shot. It's been sitting a while and may not hold a charge. First check the battery. When you verify it's in top condition or replace it, then you can go through the "Stator Papers" in the "In The Garage" section of this site. It's a step by step guide to testing the charging system. This site is invaluable for tips. Just approach the repairs in a logical manner.

I can tell you from recent experience that the bike will run with a malfunctioning stator. It will run badly, and won't idle at all unless you keep twisting the throttle, but you can get home if you can get a jump. Oh, your battery will die as well.

I strongly going through the diagnostic checklist in the stator papers to diagnose your problem. Really, I do. I just got finished replacing the stator in my '81 850G. The papers give you a step-by-step process to ID the problem with your system. It does work if you follow the steps. I bought my stator from rmstator for about 120, give or take a little.

I also recommend that you check your connections regardless of whether or not your stator passes the tests. Mine were burnt and brittle.

I was out riding today because of the checklist. I believe in the checklist. :)

If I need a fully charged battery for the test and mine is shot, can I just use jumper cables to a fully charged lawn mower battery? I don't have the budget right now to buy a new battery, I'm just trying to figure out my options here. Thanks for the help so far.

Bike will run fine with no charging system and a fresh battery. Not long but it will run.
