    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

stator problems

Hi there,

Just installed a new electrex stator and done a volt test between the wires at idle and at 4000rpm and im getting no voltage on either. Any one have an idea what might be wrong. Cant figure it out, could it be possible i put it in the wrong way?

Have you looked over the stator papers yet? I know others will have better advice than I but that's a good place to start.

Can you also post pictures of how you connected the wiring?

Yes i have looked at the stator papers. I didnt connect to the r/r yet i just done the volt test across the three wires. with engine at idle should i be getting around 20 volts? I am getting nothing at all.
 
A quick note to check that you have your meter set correctly. If I understand correctly, you are trying to measure the voltage from the stator. This would be between the wires exiting the stator. Ensure that you have AC set and not DC. ( I have done this and you get a zero reading)

That advice seems to be just about perfect.

If the meter is set correctly, and presuming the meter actually works as it should, then this should give you what you need

If there is still no reading try another meter. If no reading on a second meter you will have to speak with Electrex to get a replacement.....I believe they still give at least a one-year warranty.

I had it set on DC , Panic over.
 
Nice you see you have the situation resolved, but there is yet another thing to verify when replacing your stator.

Most of the '79 and older GS bikes had a 12-pole stator.
I believe that ALL of the '80 and newer GS bikes had an 18-pole stator.
The two are NOT interchangeable.

If all you have available for your older bike is a newer stator, you can change the rotor (the flywheel that also has the magnets) as well, and be OK. :D
