My stock 1977 Stator went(12 pole). So I ordered a new one off ebay Installed and it's not charging. Didn't realize there were two types 12 pole and 18. I installed a 18 pole. Whats the difference? Where can I get a 12 pole? Only used ones on ebay
Thanks guys

Looking at the "interference fit" on that stator, look like you probably need a rotor
as well.

YIKES!! It's no wonder it wasn't charging.

There was another member who needed one during this past week and found one. A search might find his posts to see where he ordered one.

Ha Ha Yes. When I say it went it was due to me dropping the bike on the cover while it was running. However the rotor was unscathed. Im wondering why the 18 pole fits but wont charge...

Your 1977 needs the 12 pole stator,... This guy in canada got a new 12 pole unit by mistake, read this thread

http://www.thegsresources.com/_foru...79-gs550L-rotor-removal&p=2401525#post2401525

I found an old thread from 2008 explaining the difference and saying if I use the 18 I have to swap to the 1980 and later rotor so the magnets line up. Its cheaper to get a rotor off ebay but obviously more work. Ill just buy a new 12 pole for like 80 bucks. Just sucks they are double the price of the 18 pole ones.

I hear you- apparently less demand for the 12 pole units, so less suppliers . Hopefully you noticed our endless fawning over a series r/r to prolong your new stator's life.

As with most things, there is "Good", "Better" and "Best". The one you show is in the "Good" category. Yes, it will charge the battery and run the bike, but tends to stress the stator. Much better (actually into the "Best" category) is a unit from a Polaris RAZR utility vehicle. Prices for new ones have skyrocketed lately, but good used ones are in the $40-45 range from eBay. You have to shop carefully, as there are many sellers that say that their 'new' R/R will "fit Polaris RAZR" or "replaces stock regulator" or similar wording, but it's not an official Polaris part.
If you are interested, we can provide some links to proper unit.

I have a 12 pole stator I bought off eBay! I will sell it to you but something tells me it won't be worth it to pay the shipping - I'm from Canada

I bought a caltric 18 pole on ebay because they mistakenly listed it as for 1977-79. 35 bucks free ship from Caltric. They make the correct one but dont have it listed. I found it else where for 65 bucks but they want 16 to ship. UGGG.12p.jpg

Yeah I searched and found all the knock offs. I dont need to strees out my new stator but OEM Polaris parts are 100+ and up. Caltric makes a stator to fit but so does electrosport makes one too.12p.jpg

Why risk it with a generic R/R from ebay. Given that you have a more difficult stator to find and purchase, I'd stick with the known quantity of a Shindengen sh775 regulator and keep your new stator happy for life.

Ok. So the grey is the 3 yellow from stator and how do you tell ground from positive on the black side? Are the connecting clip available too? Thanks again for all the help.

Yes, the three terminals in the gray housing are the three stator inputs. Run the three stator wires directly to these inputs, do NOT go through any of the other wiring on the bike. On the "black side", the terminal that is closer to the stator inputs is the positive output, the other one is the ground. Connect the positive output to the stock wire that the original regulator went to.

For anyone shopping for an SH775 regulator, here is what you are NOT looking for:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Voltage...a985a4d&pid=100005&rk=2&rkt=6&sd=272688616194
The wording says "New Voltage Regulator Rectifier for 760cc Polaris 800 RZR 2011-14 SH775 A13N147". Note that it has the magic words "Polaris", "RZR" and "SH775", but it also has the very misleading word "for". If you look a bit farther down, you see this:
Condition: New . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Brand: Total Power Parts

Part: RECTIFIER / REGULATOR . . . Manufacturer Part Number: APO6016

Unit Type: Part . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Warranty: Yes

Voltage: 12
You can clearly see that it is NOT a Polaris part number 4012941. Just a lot of misleading stuff before you finally get to the details.
