    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Steering Damper

apparantly it is operated by a small tapered plunger that moves in or out to restrict or relieve the damping action. i wonder if it would be possible to make a mechanical adjuster to do the job.
i guess i will just have to buy one and have a play with it
 
I looked at that... The answer is yes but it is wet in there (i.e. you'll need to seal any adjuster against the oil pressure).

Also the solenoid is on the underside.

Also you should know that these units are pretty massive (tall as well as big and heavy).

With Clipons you may manage to mount one but I don't see it ever looking good... :)

are we still talking about the same damper? i am still looking at the gsxr damper, not the big honda type ones that sit on top of the top yoke :confused:
 
I don't remember what year this one was off. I hate to even guess. It is close to fitting but would need to be flipped up. Made by KYB.

I have not pulled apart a GSXr one... Yet :)

probably wrong completely here but if there are only 2 contacts and it is controlled by the ECU then would 1 be a voltage sent to the damper to adjust it and the other a feed back to the ECU?
that could make it real easy to hard wire it to a potentiometer :confused:

I'm sure one is positive and the other is a ground. Do you know if the dzmpner has just two settings or is it continuously variable? I can do some testing with the one I have using z variable power supply. Give me a couple of days.

from what i can gather off the internet it is variable with a max of 6.5v.
0v = no damping, 6.5v = max damping. anything over 6.5v has no further effect

I just tested with the power supply and that is probably correct. I could not tell the difference between 6V and 12V just pulling in and out. It is about a 12 ohm coil in the damper.

So how would you propose setting it up? With an ECM so you can pickup speed and vary the damping with speed or the simplest is to put a switch on the handlebars to just switch it on when needed.

The easiest way to detect speed might be with a hot wire anemometer to sense air flow.

i was thinking a small dash mounted potentiometer to adjust it from zero to full damping with increments in between.
i am not interested in speed related adjustment, just what i want to set it at

cheers Pos,that looks easy enough.will have to buy a pot with a nice "nob" on it for easier adjustment,
just have to look out for another cheap damper on ebay now
 
The Honda HESD one is also 6.5v with no benefit being felt above this.
Was quite high in current draw from the research I did. There is a parts list on the link I posted.

You need a voltage regulator that can handle about 1.5amps from memory.

Parts are about 20 quid out here in the US. I don't see why the same bunch of bits wouldn't work for the GSXR one too.
