A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

from what i understand my stock coil's are the main issue why the machine isn't running correct and the plugs were way out of gap range . So i need to find some good coil's that are on the cheap side because my fund's are tight so any info would be greatful

83 gs1100gld with cdi

also my service book doesn't show how to set the timing

Agree. The stock coils are high quality. Get some new plugs, maybe some new plug caps too. Regarding the timing, it's not adjustable so don't mess with it. Oh, and your bike has an electronic ignition, with electronic spark advance built into the ignitor. It is not a CDI.

Are you sure your coils are below par? Maybe they are not getting 12 volts. I did this and my bike is much improved http://members.dslextreme.com/users/storagecliff/images/electrical_odd-n-ends.html#A06
I have also shimmed valves, cleaned carbs, installed Dynojet kit etc. I don't know where you are on these maintenance issues but I have the same bike you do and it is only just now performing like it should after doing all the maintenance.

The first thing I would check is the voltage to the coils. It should be 12.5V+ not running, and system voltage at all times, which could be 13.5V or more.

The plugs are gapped correctly ....But let me explain the coil issue ...Where the plug wire goes inside the coil well it's cracked and there are crack's along the whole wire .

I'm trying to get this thing to pass the state emission's . So every little thing has to be right on the nose or i'm not able to ride it much less get it tagged to ride legaly

I just bought new coils from Dennis Kirk today. X 2- 42.99 ea 7.99 to ship total 93.97 should be here Mon. My plug leads look bad I know my caps are. I don't know if these come with caps I don't think so. Changing the leads on the old coils my have been all I needed but I just got the works.

can you tell me

can you tell me

Why not gap the plugs correctly and call it good?
Are the coils the same on the gs1000s with points and the ones with electronic ignitions 1978 thru 1980?:)
