Hi All,

I was changing the oil filter on my '82 GS650GL. And managed to strip one of the three bolts/studs that the oil filter cover goes onto. I went to a dealer and bought the bolts, which is supposed to screw into the crankcase (in the front) but i cannot remove/extract the stripped bolt. Its a funny kind of bolt, with threads on both sids and a tiny piece of non threaded part in the middle. So one end screws into the front of the bike (at the oil filter case) and the other end protrudes so I can put the oil-filter cover through it.

Does anbody have any hints how to take out that stubborn bolt. I tried pliers and couldnt think of anything else.

There is a schematic picture in this link -

The bolt in question here is #13 in the diagram.

I would really appreciate any tips.

Thanks a ton.

bolt

Shock, heat or weld. If there is a little portion of the bolt gently hit the end of it to shock it loose then try the vice-grips. If that fails apply heat around the base of the bolt and then try the vice-grips. No 3 method is to weld a bolt onto the end and remove it that way. When heating alloy useing the oxy use the acetalyne to turn the alloy black then heat the alloy until the black dissappears then the alloy is warm enough to try and remove the bolt. Disconnect the battery when welding and have someone KNOW what they are doing when welding the bolt. Hope this helps.

the part that is threaded on both sides is refered to as a 'stud'.

is the nut for the oil filter cover stuck on the stud? this was my case. i used an impact gun and blasted it off, and the whole stud came out. i then replaced it with a bolt....carefully tightened in and spaced out with washers.

I might not understand the stud correctly but here it goes anyway. I'm assuming that what you have is a stud with threads at both ends and no head. I would try threading two nuts onto the exposed threaded part, running them into each other. Tighten them against each other which should give you something to put a wrench on to loosen the stud.
