A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

I have a 78 GS550. One of the 10mm holes on my oil filter housing has been stripped. What can I do to resolve this? Thanks.

www.Helicoil.com they are easy to use about $30 for a kit. use some perminate locktite on it. Another option is a www.timecert.com
A five minute repair with the right tools. A drill to clean up the hole, a tap to thread the hole & a thread insert to screw into the repaired hole

Looks like it was the nut that was stripped, I was unaware of how these attached. Should be able to just get a new nut. Thanks.

Hi Mr. markdjr,

I ordered a dozen extra nuts and three extra bolts for my oil filter cover. Seems like I'm always stripping those things. I must learn that they don't have to be so tight. :-k

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

The oil cover on these bikes is held in place by 3 domed nuts on three studs that fit into the crank case.

You can remove the studs and buy new ones if they are damaged and also the nuts. There are no threads on the oil cover itself, just a recess on the inside to take the oil 'O' ring.

As other have said these nuts are not very tight, so don't over tighten them and strip them.

Most of my MC work I either use a wrench Or my 1/4" drive scokets. very seldom use 3/8 drive ratchet

Lynn,
You have just hit the nail on the head! I never use a socket on a 10mm head only a ring spanner, to both loosen and tighten. They are just too easy to strip or break.

Its nice when they work as intended, ie nut strips before stud. If you replace it with a nut stronger than the stock and stronger than the bolt it might go the other way next time.
