    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

stuck front spindal/bolt

i have a 1980 gs850glt..trying to take front tire off and the axle bolt wont come out
i have loosened everything and when i tap it it goes in but causrs the fork to bend and bolt will not come free by speedo....am i missing something...thanks mike
 
Spray some good penetrating oil at every joint.
And as Hog is alluding to, try to twist it around with the penetrant in there before driving it out.

Are you supporting the weight of the wheel and tire so they don't drop, putting the axle in a bind?

.....yes. Your missing 2 things actually...

1) the brake pads stopping the disk falling out...
2) the 4 bolts underneath the front axel bolt...
these negate the need to drive the axle bolt through the wheel centre...

Not sure about the 4 bolts holding the axle in, I never remove them.

They just hold the spacer that keeps the axle aligned, as far as I know.

However, the calipers should be removed from the fork legs to allow the wheel to drop down.

I had an 1100E with the same problem, the axle was rusted hard into the spacer on the left side. In the end I had to saw through the spacer and axle, then could get the other parts and the wheel off. I still have that axle, it is still stuck after using heat, hammers and soaking a year in oil and solvents. Had to do the same once on the big motor mount bolt through the back of the engine. That one is still stuck, too.

The moral of the story is to grease the axle before letting it sit for years.
 
OK, then it's rusted into the spacer like mine was, or it could be rusted into the bearing.
Either way you may have to cut it.
 
bike is on center stand with wood bloks under engine to keep front wheel off the floor....calipers and pads are removed..there is only one pinch bolt that has also been removed....the spindle turns freely
 
If you want to try and save the spindle then you'll probably have to remove the forks with the wheel in place. You can then lift off one fork (the nut side) and let penetrating oil run down the spindle for a day or 2. Next, lay the fork on something soft and smack the spindle out with a mallet.
 
i soaked everything with liquid wrench got it nuce and hot and she came right out...bearing should be here tomorrow.....thanks for all your help
