Stupid grip question

Rats! I hope I don't have this problem too. I'm having new handlebars and Kuryakn grips shipped to me by the end of this week. Let me know if you get it figured out

As a side note. Hairspray... is there any way to get the grips off afterwards without ruining them? The new handlebar I ordered could be hit or miss on long rides...

Not the two pair I just bought. They were both exactly the same size. Each one fit perfectly on the clutch side, neither would even begin to go on the throttle side.

Then you accidentially bought grips for an ATV or watercraft. Both of these use a lever type throttle, and have the same id (smaller) on both ends.

Kuryakn grips come as a set one side will be 7/8 id for the clutch side and the other is like 1" for the throttle. The kit also comes with the required adhesive and instructions. Follow the instructions cause you don't have much working time with that adhesive.
I am using Moto-Asia grips (Chrome with rubber insert) it comes sized for clutch and throttle side just like the Kuryakn grips but without instructions and adhesive.

You know what? That might be the answer. Like I said, first set from eBay, came from Thailand, nuff said! The second set from a local shop, and the parts guy wasn't very helpful, the ATV and cycle stuff were all in the same area. I bet that's the answer!!! I'll take them back today and let ya'll know! You probably ended up with ATV or snowmobile grips.

Make sure they are specific to motorcycles. All motorcycle grips have a noticeable diffrerence in inside diameter to accomodate the throttle.

So let me get this straight, you bought universal motorcycle grips, and both the left and right grips have the smaller dia. so as to slide over the bare 7/8" handlebar?? WTF kinda bikes are over in Bangcock Thailand????? EBay sucks IMO unless I know EXACTLY what the item is I am buying.........

Yep, I figured it was only 10 bucks, not a big loss, but I would have expected them to at least FIT a motorcycle! It says motorcycle in the auction, doesn't mention ATV, but they were absolutely both 7/8" !!!!!!

The best grip glue is plain old Aquanet hairspray. Don't overspray it as it will take forever to dry, don't underspray it as it will slip little by little. Get it right and that $1.69 can of hairspray will stick your grips like nothing else.

I think you got ripped pal. I agree with the concensus. Every set of grips I ever bought had a larger diameter for the throttle.

I have always used wd-40 or something similar, and have even had to wrap a towel over the end of a 2x4 and hit it on with a small hammer.

Oh well, I took the second set back and the idget salesman said they were definitely for an ATV, so he gave me a credit, then turned me on to a nice set of Kurakyn grips that only set me back about 75 bucks.......They're just like the ones on my V-Max, really lower the vibration from the bars, I can tell I'm going to like them on the Zuki too!

Cool! Did you ge the ISO grips? Thats what I have coming tomorrow.

Hopefully these fit better than our V&H pipes did

WTF? Am I reading this right? Not soapy water? Not WD40? Black paint?

I managed a pedal bike shop for about 9 years. We used hair spray exclusively for grips- it's one of the stickiest glues known to man once it dries, is clear and cleans up nice, and slides the grip on real easy. When it's time to take the grips off, jam a screwdriver under it, another quick squirt of hair spray and it's off in seconds.

Trust me on this- hair spray. And trust Guyver.

Jethro, you've had quite the varied career...

I also use hair spray for grips, and it's always held perfectly well. A few shots on the bar, wet down the inside of the grip, and they slide right on. A squirt of compressed air under the edges of the grips blows out the excess hair spray and dries it almost instantly.

To remove the grips without damage, stick the nozzle of an air gun under the edge and pull the trigger to inflate the grips slightly so you can start to slide them off. It takes a few repetitions, but it's the easiest way if you have an air compressor.

If you don't, then a few shots of WD-40 or more hair spray (if you can get the tube from the WD-40 can to fit) will do the trick.

I've had ISO grips before, they are AWESOME! The are soft, yet you still get good feel with the handlebars, and in the hot weather ISO grips allow some air to circulate around your palms so your hands dont sweat so bad.

Me personally, never used any type of spray or glues on grips. I "wire" mine. Comes from 22 years of racing motocross. Drip a little gas down in the grip, slap them on (they slide awesome on the bars and throttle tube from the gas). Then safety wire them. THe big bonus with wiring them, is a quick slice with a blade and they come off super easy and quick.

Never tried the hairspray idea. I use an old British style of grip that is getting harder to find. It comes in two pieces, inner and outer, and dampens vibration. They also came on my old Guzzi, but in white and black. I put them in a hot water bath for a few minutes, shake away the water and then push them onto the bars.
