    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

stupid oil filter o-ring

I did a search and couldn't find anything about this, so maybe I'm just a retard. My oil filter cover has the 3 lobe o-ring and the one that was in it was leaking after I installed the cover. So I got a new ring and went to change it. The old ring had obviously popped out of the channel and gotten damaged when the cover was tightened down. The new o-ring was IMPOSSIBLE to keep in the channel. No matter what I tried, it wouldn't work. Finally managed to get it in there and thought it stayed. Nope. As soon as I started the bike there came a gusher.

So I bought some rubberized gasket material and built me a gasket. So far no leaks after a 10 mile ride. Surely not everyone has this problem. Anybody have any advice on this, or will my fix do the job? I just left the o-ring out and am relying on the gasket.

i would some stick it in there.. whether with some silicone or maybe super glue?? most people recommend that you lay your rings out flat (in a book or something) to make sure it sits in the channel properly.
 
I usually have that problem with a new O-ring, but with care I've always managed to get it into the groove. A couple of dabs of thick wheel bearing grease can help hold the O-ring in the groove. The O-ring shouldn't do that on subsequent oil changes. IMHO, there is no need to change the gasket with every filter change.

Just a light coat of grease works fine.
I change the o-ring, maybe every 3rd or 4th change. The light coat of grease helps keep it supple a long time. Never had a problem.
Just be careful when tightening the small filter cover nuts. Too many times people over-torque them. Something like 4ft/lb is enough.
 
Never had one that wouldn't stay with a dab of grease DO NOT USE SILICONE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
 
Did anyone mention using a little thick grease?? ;)

Seriously, it works...
I change filters a couple of times a summer on my drag bike and the only time I ever had a leak was when I tried to use silicone sealer...

I got some O rings with some oil filters that were not OEM and they were not pre-formed correctly. I tried for a while to get them into the grove but it would be a bear to make work short of super glueing it. Even grease woudl be a hazzle as I recall.

The OEM gasket or one pre-formed for your bike v.s. the generic is much easier and just falls into the groove.

Just thought that might be your problem and why it seems like your trying to swim upstream with something so simple.

why not just grab a cheap fram filter from walmart? they come with the o ring, and no problems here in the fitment. got one last week...it's fram ch6000. cost you 4 bucks tops.

That's exactly the oil filter I use on ALL my GS bikes. Sometimes Wally World doesn't carry it, but Advanced Auto does...

Now repeat after me:
A little grease in the groove, makes assembly smooth,
And your bike asks you please, don't forget anti-seize...

The Fram o-rings are pretty iffy -- some fit, some don't.

The o-rings that come with the Napa oil filters are better quality. The filters are part number PS4931 at your local Napa auto parts.

Personally, I put in a new OEM o-ring every spring, and use it through that season's 8-10 oil changes.
 
I just changed the oil in my 82 GS 650GLZ using a Fram filter from Advance Auto. The gasket was not even close to fitting. The part of the gasket that curves around the three bolts was not indented far enough. It was as if I had to stretch it around those three areas to get it to fit. I cleaned off the old gasket, checked it for splits/cracks/ signs of being pinched and re-used it.
 
Now I wish I had kept all the o-rings that came with every filter. Now the o-ring isn't included with the filter.
 
Thanks to all, it looks like grease is the answer!

For the record, it's a Fram o-ring, and it's seems a little small. I think I'll try a Napa brand next. However, the rubberized gasket material from Autozone is working. I took a 75 mile ride yesterday and no leaks! Maybe that info will help someone out in a pinch.
 
Oh, I almost forgot. I think this should be called the "oil filter cover mod". :) I mean, we have a mod for almost everything else on these bikes.
