A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Hi everyone,

I'm from Belgium and this is my first motorcycle ever. I hope that you guys can help me with some questions if something isn't working out on the bike. :D
Does anyone know what the most common problems are on the GS450? And how to check/solve them? It would be great if someone would know that!
Below are some photos of how the bike looks now.

Hey man, cool to see a fellow European here! whereabouts in belgium do you live? I'm from Zeeland (Middelburg) very close to the Belgium border.
Check out this link, I'm giving away free stuff, leftovers from my very first bike, a 1981 GS450, if you need something you can let me know here.

Good luck with the project.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys!
@rensdw I'm from Limburg, also very close to the Dutch border 😃 I will have a look on your website and send you a personal message if I need something, thanks!
@weasel I will check it out!

I was opening the left cover of the motor so I could clean the front sprocket this thing just fell down outta nowhere.
Does anybody know the function of this part and where it belongs?
Thanks!12557194_10207294603315999_996366737_o.jpg

You can not properly clean the carbs by soaking them like your photo shows. You must remove all the various parts from inside the carbs to allow the dip sauce to clean out the internal passages.

That part looks like an engine mount spacer, or is it rubber? Are the rear motor mount bolts in place?

No you're right @Nessism! The rear motor mount bolts aren't in place, it should be from there, thanks!

Does somebody know if DOT 5.1 brakefluid can be used on a gs450? I want to change the brakefluid because it has never been changed...

Does anybody know how I can get this petcock into Prime? It only goed into Reserve and On...
I want to try to start the bike but there needs to be gas in the carbs...

To prime with that petcock, loosen the small screw just below and to the right of the lever for 20 seconds or so, then snug it back up gently.

Now I was trying to start up the Suzuki for the first time, but ended up getting flames out of the exhaust...
What could be the cause of this? It won't start either...

Do you have the airbox? If so, you'll want to put it back on, it will be way too lean with the carbs just open like that.

It looks to me like you aren't getting gas. There's definitely spark, since you're getting the flame, but I think that the float bowls aren't filling up as you already mentioned the petcock and issue of priming.

Did you end up properly disassembling and cleaning your carbs and checking the float bowl height?

Hey Sam000lee, I did disassemble the carbs and cleaned them, but I didn't check the float bowl height, how can I check that? And the flame only comes out the right exhaust... I think there is gas, because when i try to start, sometimes there comes a haze of gasoline out of the air intake of the right carb...
Thanks for helping!

To use dot5 fluid you need to make sure the rest of your braking systen is equiped for it. Like fluid resivour, lines, piston orings and seals in the calipers.. it has diferent properties than dot 3 or 4. Do some research.
