Hello guys and girls,

I am a newbie to the GS family by recently picking up a GS850GL, but the tank has some rust inside. I looked for sealers and ways to get the rust out, but in doing so I found a gas tank off a GS1100 which is already clean inside for $40.

My question is, will the GS1100 tank fit on my GS850GL without major mods.

I do not currently have a reliable way to get on the internet so I will thank you guys and girls in advance for any help. It may be more than a couple of days before I can get back here.

I have know idea if it will fit but the people who do know will probably need to know what year tank you are looking at. the devil is always in the details. :-D

I dont think that it will fit. I'm also looking to get rid of the tank on my GS850L , although its in good shape with a little surface rust (due to my improper storing during winter.. ) i need the larger capacity of the 850G tank.

As far as I know , the GS850 (L and G can interchange) is 25 inches from the front to rear of tank, and has the 1 bolt setup.

I also believe that the frames are different on the 850 and 1100, so this would make the gas-tank design different.

just my .02 cents.

.

I'm 99.9% certain the gs/x 1100 and GS1000 tanks won't fit (they are slightly longer).

The GS750 tank does fit and all G's including gs1000g fit. Check the fuel tap positions although I don't think there an issue except for the GS750 which has slide carbs and the tap further rearward (the tap fawls the wider CV carbs abd the taps were moved 20-40mm forward??).

Cheers, Graeme.

Anyone know if a '83 or '84 1100E tank will fit on a '80 GS1000E?

Thanks!

I have a 1980 GS850 G gas tank ill sell you for $20, but whatever shipping is

Are you 100% sure? I thought the L models shared the same, larger, frame as the 1000cc bikes...

I'm also looking to get a new tank for my '80 850L - but I'm looking more for a good candidate for a repaint. Mine has a lot of little dents in it and also has a bit of rust internally. So I'd appreciate a PM from anyone that comes across one!

How 'bout year interchangeability? Anyone know if the other years will fit? I do know that on later L models the seat moved further back and it would seem the tank would have to do the same.

And yes, a larger tank would certainly be nice - stopping every 150 miles might be nice for the stretch factor, but there are times when I just want to keep going! If you're sure about the L & G interchangeability maybe I'll start looking at those as well...
