Thanks for the picture. What would really help is a view of the sprocket side of the wheel.

I know that the wheel and fatter tire can clear either side of the swingarm; it's lining up the sprockets that presents the challenge.

here is some info a chap in scandinavia sent me on this mod

" The wheel is from a GSX-R1100 -93. It was quite simple task to fit it to the std swingarm. The most complicated part was chain lining.

First you need suitable spacers. Either use some washers in addition to original spacers or make new spacers.

Then chain lining.
-I used GSX sprocket carrier. It's few millimeters narrower than GSX-R one.
-Then I mounted a GSX-R sprocket backwards on the carrier. This moves the sprocket closer to the center line since the sprocket is dished on the other side.
-With these mods 12 mm offset was needed for the front sprocket. I used a 10 mm sprocket and couple of washers.

Now there is maybe 1-2 mm clearance from the chain to to the frame tubes. Currently I have a 180 mm tire but the chain rubs on it's side. I shaved a little bit off from the tire solve this but when I change the tire I will get a 170 mm one. It should be possible to use a 180 mm tire but I guess that I should move the wheel few millimeters to the right to make enough space for it. I think that the wheel is now on the center line of the bike but it's hard to say for sure. Anyway, few millimeters to the left or the right shouldn't make any difference. But a 170 mm tire makes things a lot easier, 180 mm is on the edge, I think.

Oh, the brake is one issue too. In any case you need to make a new torque arm for the caliber. The GSX-R caliber hangs on the bottom side of the axle so if you are going to use it you need make a new mount for the torque arm. I used a caliber hanger from a GSX-F to mount the caliber on the top side and the I just made an arm to the original mount. ''

hope that clears things up a little more ...
the pic is the only helpful left hander on there

Thanks very much for the info. Looks like I've got some work to do this winter.

swingarm

swingarm

I have a swingarm for sale!!! from a 81 1100 if your interested?? 100.00

Anyone have an idea of what year GSXR swingarm might fit an 85 GS700? Without too many mods? Are the 700 and 1100 pivot points the same measurements?

None without MAJOR modifications. BUT you can fit a gsxr wheel on to your stock arm. I have a gsx600f Katana wheel on mine, bolted right up. The front fork assembly was almost as easy as the rear. Billy Ricks has the even wider wheels and fork assy from a gsxr on his 700, also with the stock swingarm.

Were there any issues with sprocket allignment? Would a katana front wheel work on the stock forks? Am replacing fork seals at the moment , and have a set of clip-ons coming in the mail. Kinda wanna wait a bit b4 replacing the forks.

What type of caliper is this from. I thought most if not all rear break caliper upgrades (when using gsx wheels) involved using an inverted rear caliper. And thus having to re-weld the brake arm on the underside when using a gs1(1/0)00 swingarm.

Nope. They are a different width. Would need a lot of mods to fit, the kat (and gsxr) forks use the same steering head bearings. Only mod is to the stops, and that is a very easy mod. Two 6mm bolts. Besides the newer forks are better.
