I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

The tach drive portion that the tach cable screws into on the front of the engine seems to be broken off.. Not sure what to do next, as it has a small oil leak coming from it...

82 GS850G engine...

thoughts or suggestions?

If you can't remove it from the front, more than likely you'll need to remove the cam cover and try pushing it out from the inside.

can I pop the one out of my 80 engine and put it in my 82 engine?

I was afraid of that.. how can I seal it up.. it seems to be leaking just a little bit...

Take a picture of the broken part in question and post it up.

You gotta go in from the very bottom ( 6 oclock position ) and get a small flat tip in between the head and the drive housing. Then you have made a gap so you can get 2 screw drivers at 3 and 9 position to pry it out of the hole. Youre having so much difficulty because that Oring on the housing wedges in there pretty stiffly. Take your time and dont be afraid to use some force to pry it out of the hole. Replace the Oring and reinstall it.

Here are two pics from the side and front...

Gotta take the valve cover off and push that out from the inside...you could try vice grips and pulling really hard but the grips may slip and set ya on your rump. In any case that ones shot so give it a try

Grab the part still sticking out with some locking pliers and wiggle while pulling.

I will give that a try.. can I put some aluminum tape over the hole to seal it up till I get the new tach drive or is there too much pressure on it for that to work?

High heat and hot oil tend to not allow "tape" to stick. ;)

Just replace the part, O-ring and seal while you adjust the valves and change the cam cover gasket.
You were going to adjust the valves soon anyway, right?

Eric

yeah... i did that already.. then noticed that the tach drive was broken... now I have to do it all over again...

Negative on the tape idea.

Find a plug that will fit the opening at a hardware store, auto parts ect, or whittle a plug out of a piece of wood and tap it in place. Be careful and don't bash it so much that you crack the head.

Find a washer and bolt to retain the plug to the head. Ride bike....

that sounds like an idea that would work...

then buy new tach drive, wait for it to arrive, take out wodden or other plug, replace with new tach drive install cable, ... and then ride again...

sound about right?
