A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Mine seems to have sheared off the end on the right as pictured...
It will not drive the Tach as there is no flattened end to fit into the slot on the cable.
Can I buy this part seperate and replace it without tearing into the engine?
I think (?) I can simply take out the holder sleeve and slip in the new driven gear ..? Yes ?
Any suggestions on where to purchase a new driven gear --or am I in for a new electroni tach modinfication ?

Yes, take out the sleeve and likely the gear will go with it.
The gear may be left behind.
In that case put a bit of twist on whatever is sticking out to unmesh the splines.
The seals inside the sleeve x2 are real cheap and worth replacing.
I just checked my valves last weekend and on my model the sleeve/gear sits in the cover and must be removed before the cover.
I inserted the gear first this time, and then the
sleeve over it.
Easier then both at same time.
Did have to lightly tap on a piece of wood to get it to drop over.

Would want to figure out why/how it broke off before replacing though.

My money is on a locked up cable.

I thought so too...
So I unsheathed the cable - and worked it from the bottom..and all is well
I really believe this is an operator error situation.
A few weeks ago the cable had loosened up and was just hanging there.
I put it back in and tightened it up.
I DO NOT remember checking to be sure it was mated properly..and I think I just somehow killed it.

I blame ME :grey: :disturbed:

Still seeking a place in the USA to purchase this part.

I replaced mine a while back, it's simples. (Assuming the sleeve is not stuck in the head, like mine was. Then it's a pain.)

You shouldn't have too much trouble finding a new one. Should be the same part on nearly all 8-valve GSes. They're $25 new from partsoutlaw. There are a bunch of used ones on eBay too but you have to be careful you don't get one from a bike with the gear in the valve cover because those go in the opposite direction.

Like Crankthat said, get the seals too.

No one gets a free ride :)

Part ordered - Next week arrival -
Thanks to all for talking me through this -
I blame me - I broke it - and now I gotta fix it.
Although riding without a tach isn't too bad...
I rarely look at it anyway and shift by ear --

The Tach & Speedo on this bike have never really worked too well since I got it.
I am gradually getting things back to working order , and adding some personal touches as well
I installed the GPS bracket last night so now I can transfer my Zumo from 1 bike tot he other depending on which I am riding.
Hopefully I will need the gps next year as a longer ride is on my radar - visiting a new service garage I have heard about
;)

I replaced my tach seals and I'm familiar with the part, message me if you need help!

It doesn't look like that any more.

I'll get a current picture tonight. :encouragement:

I have at least added a couple of workbenches and a few "toys".
