    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

As long as it takes. MEK won't hurt the metal. You gotta have good plugs for the various openings otherwise the tank will leak MEK all over the place.

It will help if you add some abrasive material inside the tank that you can shake around. Some people use roofing nails, I've used sharp edge stones like aquarium rocks. Shake the tank every so often and rotate the tank to assure the old liner is kept wet. Shake the tank as hard as possible to try to get the liner to release.

I was going to use the cap from the 1100 tank I have, as a plug. I traced out the petcock on a piece of aluminum to plug the petcock hole. I was planning on making a gasket too.
 
A gas cap won't work since it's vented. You will need something for the sending unit hole too. Don't dump chemicals inside the tank with the sending unit in there.

I haven't figured out exactly what I will do about the sending unit hole. I'll probably do a version of the one in the picture.
 
Well, tomorrow is the day. Unless my wife has a list of crap she'd rather I worked on. But I'll put up a Hell of a fight!
 
That MEK is making quick work of that bad Kreem liner. It has only been in for about 10 min, & already the stuff is gooey. I hope to get it all out soon.
 
Make sure you use a flashlight through all the various openings to make sure all the liner is out. And I mean ALL the liner is out. An inspection mirror will help you see the top of the tank.

Next step is phosphoric acid to derust. Home Depot sells this stuff.

It turned to goo, but it doesn't want to let go yet. Time will tell.
 
Phosphoric Acid won't eat Kreem? Seems like I could have skipped the MEK if it did...

That's the same problem I had with that tank. You need some abrasive material in the tank to "scrub" the metal. Roofing nails, aquarium rocks, something with sharp edges to scrub the kreem off. Soak and shake, soak and shake, repeat again and again.

And no, the phosphate wash won't eat the Kreem.
 
I guess I could just fill the tank with MEK. It's going to cost a fortune though.

I used about a quart of 5/8- crushed rock and shook it every half hour for a couple days. Cleaned it up nicely. Hard to get it all out but you can tell when it is....
 
Ugh... thought the real stuff would shift it easy enough, presumed it was the California nanny state that was holding it back - sorry about that :(

I have also read about Aircraft stripper being used where MEK fails.

Good suggestion. I used pea gravel on one tank and while it worked, sharped edge stones like you used would have been better.
 
Sorry for the silence, I've had very little free time lately.
The tank Sat until tonight (almost 2 weeks) with the MEK in it. I've been out to shake it every so often. I drained it tonight & will be switching to acid tomorrow. I did get some stuff out & a glob of the Kreem liner about the size of a large wad of bubble gum.

In other news, I hooked up a small fuel tank that I had, and put about a 1/2 quart of petrol in it. Choked it, twist o the throttle, and a quick shot of starting fluid.... And it's ALIVE!!!!

Now to just get this tank fixed!!!
