A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

at the drags

in 1985 i took my 81 gs1100 to the drag races, i had 2 sets of carbs both using pods. most of the time i had 33 smooth bores on the bike. a friend gave me his CVs off his 84 gs1150. i did my own jetting and needles so i might have been off BUT with the CVs it ran 114 mph .i re installed the 33s and ran 122 mph. maybe the jetting could have been better ? on the CVs but on the street the bike ran smooth and responsive.
the bike was stock except for a V&H pipe

Just wondering. What determines if it is a smoothbore? I have two sets of 29s on my desk at work waiting for me to do something with. One set is off my KZ1000 Shaft drive Kaw and the other I got free when a friend cleaned his garage. They look the same as the examples above except the bowls are a bit different, with a nipple in the middle with a drain plug angled off to the side. I'm pretty sure they are just standard KZ carbs.

do both pairs measure 29mm at the rear throat area?
i look for the large removable plug on the bowls for changing main jets.
the 29mm measurement and the large bowl plugs are a dead give a way for me.
im sure theres number maybe..
maybe some (old ) timer may jump in and let us know.:)

It measures 29mm id on the block side at the opening. Also, the big removable plug is what mine doesn't have. Mine have a nipple with hose and a small removable drain plug off to the side at an angle. I'll post a pic later, maybe someone will know. Maybe I will go to the KZ rider site, I lurk there sometimes (not nearly as cool as this place).

tucker what you have is 28mm mechanical carbs not smoothbores.
round slide mikuni smoothbores come in odd number sizes..29/31/33/ ect..
if yours are 28mm then i will guess that they are from a kawi of a certain year and model.

I've never seen 31s anything other than the Keihin CRs. Ray.

I think the easiest way to tell if its a smoothbore is to look down the thoat of the carb. If its smooth all the way through. Its a "smooth bore". If you have a set of vm26 or vm28's. They look similar on the outside. But the carb throats are not smooth all the way through.
Sorry if Im captain obvious.
