    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Testing spark and compression

For compression:

"Do remove the tank, pull all the plugs and disconnect the inlet power to the coils."

-Am I removing the tank completely and disconnecting the hoses from the petcock?

-What the heck is the inlet power to the coils?

For spark:

Do I just unscrew one sparkplug, re-attach it to the wire and crank the engine to see if I get a spark against a fin?

For compression :

Yes - remove the tank completely and disconnect the hoses from the petcock.
The inlet power to the coils are the live wires going into the coils - its best to remove both (black and orange wires).
Pull all the sparkplugs. Dont forget to keep throttle wide open while checking compression.


For spark:

Correct !!

More questions:

Why doesn't the manual mention all that? It just says to pull the plugs and screw the tester into one cylinder, open throttle and crank?

Is the bike gonna start when checking the spark? Or will removing one plug prevent that?
 
I don't remove the tank. I simply pull all the plugs, throttle wide open, and test one at a time. For the spark test, lay the plug wires somewhere where they can't arc and hook up one sparkplug at a time and test.

Excepting the fact that everything on the damn bike that the wires can reach is metal!!!
 
The empty plug boots probably won't arc. Just don't lick your fingers. :-D

I'm gonna write this down in my bike journal so they know what happened when they find the body!
 
You could put a piece of electrical tape over the empty boots, or lay them on a piece of cardboard.

I was just kidding, I'm much too reckless for that!

Got a spark on all four plugs. I don't know about "nice, fat, spark" as I have nothing to compare it to, but it was there and it was frequent.
