A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hey,

Just wondering what/if any other GS ignitors will work with my 1985 GS550L. I don't mind splicing in new harnesses to make out.

Thanks!

Any from the same year & probably the year either side should work... need more bike info from you.

You can also switch it out for a Dyna S for $120 from Z1 Enterprises.

Dan :)

He'll also need to find and older mechanical advance mechanism to swap to dyna S. I have an ignitor of a 1980 GS750E for sale. This would work on an 80-82 750E and 80-82 1100E as far as I KNOW. Some research would tell if it would work for other models. If you are interested in it, see my FOR SALE post in the for sale parts section.

There was a thread a while back where someone grafted a Dyna S onto a second generation 550. Engine cover would not fit back on but the bike ran. Do a search and you should be able to find the thread.

Thanks for the info....Yeah I saw where a Dyna S system was used on a 2nd generation 550. I really don't want to go this route though. It's a customers bike and he simply wants bad OEM parts replaced with good OEM. I keep seeing alot of gs450, 850, etc ignitors on ebay for cheap and really wish I knew if I could adapt one.

There are two types of ignitors for GS bikes: early model that used a mechanical advance, and later type with the advance built into the ignitor (later 550 has this type). I have no idea about interchangeability but considering it's a customer bike, I don't see how you can go grafting on some other part anyway.

Good luck.
