    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

i was riding my 78 GS1000E home from work tonight on I-74 and had a great ride got home and went to shut the bike off and no keys were in the ignition!!!!!!! ya dont know why they came out but they did can anyone tell me how to go about getting a new one since my dumbass left the spare attached to the main which means that both are now either smashed on the interstate or on the side of the road somewhere lol

Sounds like you need a new ignition switch. A locksmith can make you a key but it will most likley fall out like your old one.

and how do i go about getting a new key
the ignition switch im sure i can find on here or elsewhere
 
Get the three digit code from the seat lock, take it to a competent locksmith.
$15 and a few minutes later you have a key.
 
Pull the ignition switch out and look at the bottom of it. There should be a number on there. You can go to Dreyer on Washington Street and have a key made off that code for about $12. If it's illegible, Dreyer can still make you a key, but it'll cost you $35.

I learned long ago not to have both keys for one bike on the same ring. A friend of mine high sided while we were riding, and his keys went flying off into nowhere. We spent two hours looking for the damned things in the ditch by the road until we found them.

I have two keyrings with three keys (one for each bike) on each one. When I go for a ride, one keyring is in the ignition (duh), and the other one is in the inside liner pocket of my riding jacket.
 
thank you very much for the two ways to go about it and i will make one of them happen in the morning and i do believe hindsight is twenty twenty now that i look at it i realize it was stupid but i didnt realize it till it was too late lol

use a flashlight and look down where the tank meets up at the steering head stock and at the wiring harnes where it comes around the head stock. keys may have landed there and stuck.
also look on top of the engine.

What happened to you happened to me a few years ago. The key is worn and the tumblers won't hold it tight. A good locksmith will make you a key from the helmet lock. hat you can get off the bike without too much trouble. The three didgit code will be helpful to him also if he does alot of automobile keying.
Remeber to have a new key made every once in awhile .
 
Old vehicles are reowned for having loose ignition barrels. You can either replace it (as suggested by Ness) or put a clip of some sort on your keys. I've done the latter and clip the keys to the wiring harness on the handlebars. If they rattle loose they will just hang there until I stop.

Turn the ign on and put the key in your pocket !! I went thru the lost keys a few weeks ago. Had some extras made !!! MIne may turn up some day, lost them at home...
 
You can also get the 3 digit factory key code by looking on the bottom side of the locking gas cap.

thanks for the help again guys i not only got ahold of a suzuki and honda dealer in town because of advise but i also got my ignition out and am taking it in morning to have a new THREE keys cut lol this website saves me alot of hastle and i appreaciate all the speedy replys to my posts

don't use the gas tank cap. The locksmith who made my keys (since when I got the bike, it had no keys) told me that the gas cap has incomplete tumblers so multiple keys can open the same cap. you need the seat lock, helmet lock, or ignition. I've used both seat lock and helmet lock. both made perfect keys. Could also be the experience of this locksmith. $15 picked up the next day.

My ignition hold the keys nice and tight, but I always have a key on it's own ring for the ignition and my normal key ring with a bike key on it in a zippered pocket (usually bc my house key is on that one too, but also just incase)
 
if you dont get a new ignition pull your key out after you start it and put them in your pocket while you ride.
