A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Ok so thisis my first post here and i hope you can help me. I had to do an overhaul on my 1982 gs 450l which consisted of new rings and all new gasket's. now my problem is that , i forgot to mark everything (bone head move) but anyway i belive it is 180 degrees out of itme and it crank's over and has spark and fuel. how can i get in time and check to see if it is 180 off or not? I dont have a book for it eaither, so any help would be great.

standard procedure is(for my 850):

turn engine to TDC on 1 and 4 cylinders.
line up 1 on exhaust cam with gasket face, pointing forward.
2 should be straight up, or close to it. attach chain to exhaust cam.
count 20 individual rivets in the chain, not links, but rivets.
when 20 rivet is reached, line the 20th up to 3 on the intake cam.
install tensioner and chain holder.

You are going to need a book for sure, but catbed has the basic procedure down.

The reason you are going to need the book is because different bikes have different rivet counts. For example, the shaft-drive 650s use 20, the chain-drive 650s use 19. No telling what your 450 should be. :-s

.

Exactly -- they're all slightly different, so you need exact info for your exact bike.

I have a GS500 manual, but the 450 could be different.

C'mon! Any 450 owners out there?

If it's assembled and you just need to check, at TDC on the compression stroke (usually, you align a "T" mark on the rotor with the #1 pickup. Turn the crank one more turn if the alignment is not as described below), there is a notch in the end of each camshaft on the right side.

They should be facing each other -- the exhaust cam notch should be pointing straight back (parallel with the cylinder head, not the ground) and the intake cam notch will be pointing straight forward.

It's pretty easy to see if you're a tooth off.
