    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Timing Chain Jump at Crankshaft

This is a continuation of my thread at http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum/showthread.php?245453-GS650L-Intake-valve-not-seating about the loss of compression in the #3 cylinder and sudden poor running of the engine. I took a look at the timing tonight, not good. The timing jumped and most likely bent at least this one valve enough to prevent it from closing.

The two cams are still aligned and the correct number of chain pins between the timing marks, but the crankshaft is not at TDC any more... the cams are ahead of the crankshaft.

Scenario on the road when this problem occurred: back road, traveling about 35 mph around a somewhat blind curve and a car pulled out in front of me. Not quite an emergency stop, because I was able to hit the horn while rapidly slowing down behind this car, but that was the end of the good running engine. I was downshifting quickly, and braking hard, but would that have caused the chain to jump on the crankshaft?

Seems the problem was the tentioner stuck or has broke. And yes the chain could jump at the crank as slack.... or whip if you will..happened. Time to yank the head and get it right again would be my approach.

On at least half the cam chain tensioners I've encountered, someone has tightened the locking screw against the pushrod, therefore ensuring that the tensioner can't work.

No idea whether this is a partial explanation for what happened to your bike, but definitely pay attention to the state of the tensioner when you remove it.
 
The previous owner had the bike for 30 years. I don't think he did anything except for oil changes and tires, so everything else is just age and neglect.

Pulled off the head today. The chain guide for the cam tensioner is snapped in half right where the tensioner would press against it.
