    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Timing on GS850

Hello,


OK, I am a newbe and I bought a 1980 GS850L a few months ago and have rebuilt the carbs, replaced the battery, redone the brakes, new manifolds, and a tune up. so here is my question. I rode the bike up the road a time or to but it was running rough and this was before I dipped the carbs in carb dip. it will fire up pretty easy and idle but as soon as I give it gas it goes dead, I looked on here and there are some very close post however I have checked everything that was posted in here to look at and here is where I stand. I pulled off the valve cover to check timing and when the #1 is TDC both valves are closed as should be, but the crank shaft is not pointing at the solenoid that fires the coils it is a little past the solenoid. Is this normal ? or am I out of time? Also anyone have details how to set timing on these old bikes? I am ordering a repair manual but would really like to get this bike going soon.

I did use new master rebuild kit for all four carbs, however if you have any ideas I am open to anything.

Before you start looking at timing you need to sort your carbs - that's almost certainly where your problem lies. Are you running with the standard airbox?
 
Well, I will be running the stock air box, It is currently off though. Will that cause it to ack this way? I have taken them apart and cleaned them and checked everything four or five times. I am going to recheck float level today and set at 25CM I think....... I have a print out on how to set. I have read many post the theses carbs are a pain to setup so any info is VERY helpful.
 
There's your problem - it will tickover but won't run for tuppence without the airbox on and properly sealed.

Running with no airbox will cause your symptoms.

Not sure how you managed to set the float height at 25CM, the specified height is 22.4MM +/- 1.0mm.

LOL, Sorry I meant mm, ok I will install the airbox and see what happens. Thanks for the input.
 
OK, So I reset the float level in the carbs and installed the stock airbox, it will run much better and I hope after doing the carb syncking today it will be good to go, It does still backfire on number three plug and the header does not get a hot in that pipe as it on the other three. Could this be caused by the carbs not in synk? Thaks foe all the information you have given so far, Been a lot of help.

Yes, It is marked on the plug wire as number 3, I was just able to ride it for the first time over 50 miles and hour and man does this bike ride well, I am so happy I sold the harley after riding this bike. I still have some backfiring but if I open the throttle widde open after a second of sluggishness the bike takes off like a bullet. I am going to let it cool dowm install my ports to sync the carbs and try to tune it in.
