I ran my 78 gs550, and heard some noise comming from the timming chain so i took the cover back off, and as i was turning the engine over, (from the intake side) the chain would lift a bit tword the center ( space between gears) and give slack then tightten again on the next gear. i think the ytensioner is good, it worked when i took it apart. the chain was new from suzuki.and mached the old one. any ideas???

Sounds like the tensioner is NOT good, or at least not doing its job correctly.

When you put the tensioner in, was it installed correctly? To do it correctly, you retract the pluger and lock it in place with the set screw. Install the tensioner, turn the crank forward just enough to assure that all tension is on the front side of the chain. Release the set screw, you should hear it take up slack and you should also see the wheel on the right side of the tensioner move. Rotate the engine, using a wrench on the right end of the crank, do a couple full revolutions. Now go back to the set screw, snug it down, then back it off half a turn. Lock it in place with the lock nut so it stays that half a turn out. Now it can still move to take up any additional tension that might happen. Sounds like your tensioner was locked back into place and can't move any more.

You'll get a little slack and tightness from the valve springs.
Do what Steve said and clean it really well.

will try that, it looks like i could almost take out a link ,maybe 2 of chain when it gives slack, but i will try the tensioner adjust=ment again.
with luck i can take a pictures of it and post tommorow or wedsday

Don't take out any links. The timing will be off and you'll break something.
With that much slack and the tensioner working properly sounds like you need to replace the chain.

Bill,
I think he fitted a new chain. That was my understanding anyway. I could be wrong though, I often am.

well yes i did split my chain to install it,(it was $400. to have it put in, split the case) and while it was apart i messured it to the old one and the lenghth and pins were the same so i threaded it thru and re-assembled it. made sure all the links moved after wards. :-k im gonna try to get pics tonight

Just for my curiousity, take a picture or two of the cam chain guides. I had a noisy 650 with a badly worn guides. The guides were deeply grooved and the pins were actually making contact with it. I ended up replacing cam chain and guides (Motor was already split, easy job). I even put in a different tensioner. Seemed a lot quiter after rebuild. Thanks.

There is no way that is right. :(
Are you sure you have the right cam chain?

I'm with Bill on this one. How many links are in the chain, there should be 116.

The chain seems to be going over the top chain guide and there is a gap between the two when you turn the motor over. There should not be. And you shouldnt be able to lift the chain like that. There doesn't appear to be any tension on it.

What camshafts have you put in it. Does it have the correct sprockets on the cams. There are different sizes. The 550 has 30 teeth and I think the 650 has 32 teeth. If you had the larger sprocket on then the chain would ride up above the chain guide.

We need more info on the rebuild. Did you do the cam timing correctly.

Are you sure the tensioner is working OK. Did you hear it POP when you put it back together and released the lock bolt.

My chain acted the same way, even after taking the stock tensioner apart and cleaning it a few times. I finally just bought a manual adjuster.
