  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Tires for 82 GS650G

Hello all.
I am looking to replace the tires on my 82 GS650G. The tires it currently has are Dunlop Gold Seal K627 in back and F11 in front.

My problem is the rear tire is a 120/90 17. This is apparently an odd size because it is difficult finding tires in this size. The tires I have found are Cheng Shin, Bridgstone Battlax BT45, and one dealer said they could get a Dunlop K155 in this size. I know the Cheng Shin's are questionable quality (some poeple like them, some don't), but I am unfamiliar with the Bridgestone's or the K155. Has anyone had experience with either of these two tires on a GS?

One dealer was trying to get me to buy a 130/90 17 but I am leary. He was telling me the 120/90 17 was the same size as stock and the 130/90 17 is one size over. Can anyone verify this for me? I was thinkning the 120/90 was already one size over. I think the larger tire will fit but I don't think I want to go more than one size bigger.

He has an Avon AM21 for about $105. Anybody tried one of these?

I would appreciate it if anyone out there that has a "midsize" GS could share what tire sizes and brand they are running. If people are running 130/90's on 650G's with good results I will probably go with that size. Thanks in advance for any help, I've been looking at tires for tooo long. #-o

Typ0, I had the same problem with finding a 120/90 for my 650 and have been runnning the 130/90 for years without problems.

I've been using Avon AM 18 Super Venom rears and it's on its third one now. The last one I had fitted was hard to get because I think they stopped making them, maybe the AM20 is the replacement? I've always liked the Avons on my 650, they grip well and they always kept me right-side-up. I'd get about 10,000 miles from a rear which isn't bad for a big heavy old bike.

I don't think you'll go far wrong with the Bridgestones either, I had the BT45's on another bike and they are very good tyres. Dunno about the ChengShins ...

I run Bridgestones on my bike (Spitfire S11), and they are available in a 130/90H - 17 that will fit your bike.

Check out Dennis Kirk or ask your local shop to get some in for you.

They are $81.99US from DK.

I have had lots of success with my Spitfire tires, getting easily over 10000 miles on a rear, and they are sticky enough to handle some light twisties ( I don't know as I'd want to try to match a sportbike though).
 
I found an IRC duotour in 120/70 17 for 55.00 that works pretty good. Found a matching front for the same price at southwest moto

I recommend them. I also have a 650G so I know how hard itis to find rear tires.
 
I, too, have an '82 650G. I just put a Bridgestone on the front. I often use Bridgestone because I think it's a good compromise between quality and price.

I used Cheng Shins once, front and rear, because I wanted new tires for a trip from Columbus to Phoenix. The lasted the trip (@4000mi.) and then about another 1500 after I got back. They seemed ok, but keep in mind that I'm not really a "corner carver".

Thanks for the info guys. As far as the Avon tires are concerned, I believe the AM20 is a front and the AM21 is a rear. Nice to know I can go to 130/90 if I have to. Opened up a lot more possibilities for tires thats for sure.

I'm trying to decide between the Avon AM20/AM21 combo, Bridgestone BT45's, or Dunlop D404 if I want to go cheaper. I looked at the Metzeler's but I'm concerned about the ME33 front. I have read posts saying they have a tendency follow rain grooves. We have lots of grooved pavment around here. They also do alot of asphalt repaving in the summer. I have seen them chew off the top few inches of the road and then leave it like that for a few weeks. I don't know if ya'll know what I'm talking about but when you hit road that's like that, my bike is all over the place. The front wheel goes one way and the rear goes another. If the Metzeler's are bad on rain grooves I don't want to find out how they handle this stuff. It would be nicew to have a tire that could handle it, but I don't know if one exists.
 
The BT45 is an absolute favorite among riders of Yamaha RD/RZ's and Kawasaki triples. You can't go wrong with them. A friend of mine has the Spitfires on his CB750F. I've ridden it and it feels great.

I will be getting either of these, probably the Spitfires, for my GS700E.

I put a 130/90-17 on the rear of my '81, along with a 100/90-19 (stock is 90/90, IIRC) on the front. It will raise the bike a little bit, so if you're tippy toeing it now, ho boy. It will also change the overall gear ratio (rollout). Get up and go might suffer a tad. The good news with mine was that the speedo became more accurate with the front tire change.
It will also sit a little more over when on the sidestand. Easier to get up on the center though. Make sure the rear tire clears the brake torque arm (mine had 1/2") and the front clears the fender.

I meant 120/90, not 120/70

These are the OEM sized tires that came on the bike
 
I have the '81 650G and it had 130/90 17 on it when I got it, have replaced with a couple since, both 130 and they fit fine.

I just bought front and rear from Ronayers.com for $101 (D404's)

I like them so far, only 200 miles as of yet. I heard they are made in japan in stead of here, and have a lighter sidewall (=more flex in the turns) but I can't notice it so much?

so far I can tell they're stickier than my old worn out dry cracking metzelers, but I've heard great things about metz as well and can't complain about the two I've run.

I went down to the not so local MC shop and it just so happens they have a pair of D404's in 100/90 19 and 130/90 17 in stock they will sell me for $100. I think I will get them. What is killing me is they want $75 to change and balance both of them. I went home and took the tire off so it cuts down the price to $48 for both. I need to find me a garage that works for beer too. =P~ <- I have no idea what this smiley is doing. I think maybe he has has too much beer.

I did look at the IRC's and they do look pretty cool. They also had them in the 120/90 17 size. Maybe next time. I has contemplated the BT45 also but in the long run, I needed to keep the $ down so hopefully the D404's will work out. I still have a bunch of work to do.

I change my own tires because I don't have 70-80 dollars to spend for that. Some forum members rave about how cheap their local shop charges for this but i have not found such a deal. They also sem to take their time doing it, one shop told me I could have my wheels back in a day or two.

I did it myself in 2 hours without a machine. A day or two is not really acceptable.

Just a note: for those who are worried if a 130 will/can replace a 120.
the 130 tire is only 1/4" wider than the 120...thats 1/8" on both sides.
Please correct me if I'm wrong but I believe this is true.

Yes, a 130 tire is 10mm wider over all than a 120 tire.

It will also be 18mm larger in diameter

130 => width of tire in Millimeters
90 => height of tire, expressed as a percentage of the width
H => Speed rating of the tire
17 => Rim size the tire will fit.

Some tires (like Bridgestone Spitfires) may also have an 'F' or an 'R' in the name, signifying 'Front' or 'Rear'
 
Just got back from the local Suzi shop.
The floor was full of people looking and buying new rides AND the parts counter was 4 deep.
I took in the wheel and the new Dumlop 404 I got from Ronayres and in the time I spent at the parts counter getting new wheel bearings they mounted and balanced the new rubber for $20.

Good service keeps me buying there!
I'm loyal that way. I sure am glad it's a Suzuki shop. 8)

Just a little update. I bought the D404's, took the wheels off and brought them down when they opened. After 2 1/2 hours and $50 I finally got out of there :-# ...

Anyway. After I got the wheels back on, I went for about a 70 mile ride yesterday. SO far, no complaints. They have a nice ride and track real good through the corners. Even my wife (who was on the back) commented on how much better they felt. But then, they are new. Time will tell how they do in the long run.

The cold weather has returned here though. May be a few days before I get out again.
