Too much Clear Coat?

I wouldn't ride it for at least a week. The seat will rub the paint and damage it.

darn, well i guess the batterys going on the tender and im gonna do some polishing to my clutch cover and what not.. what about leaving the parts in the sun?

Check this paint baking booth.:) Temp got nice and toasty inside after closing the lid to speed cured the paint. Even after doing something like this I still wouldn't ride the bike until the paint fully hardened.

I had just shot the last layers of clear when I bumped the tank off the stand and it tipped over and flopped top side down on the concrete. Surreal experience, and not in a good way. Put the tank in that heated chest so it would cure enough over night to color sand and reclear the next day. All worked out in the end.:D

haha i can picture that happening.. the pain and agony... last year i made a thread on after i finished my "beautiful black tank" with crap clear coating.... the next day (made seat creases all over the tank btw) i went to the pump and BECAUSE i was just so damn meticulous about even the slightest drop i somehow managed to pull it out while it was still fueling.. BAM ALL OVER THE TANK my life was flashing before my eyes as seconds later the entire job started to bubble up and lift HAHAHAHAHAA man im so glad i can laugh at it now because now its candy apple red so it all worked out in the end...

You had there what's called "blushing".Very lucky it did go away, most times it's pemanent.Only way to get rid of it is to sand and reclear.Comes from humidity while spraying.

i just looked at the tank and almost all of the cloudyness dissapeared! very sexy looking thing.. its candy apple red i will try to get better pics in the sun.. the pics i took were in the dark with the flash on... on the corners of some of the side covers there are some cloudy drips but that doesnt seem like its gonna be much of a problem.. a lot of stress has been lifted off my shoulders when i saw much of it has dissapeared

Glad to here you made out OK. It is a nasty thing doing a job twice.

What a difference a day makes.
From ghastly to the gorgeous in ess than 24 hours.

Looks Great!

Looks Great!

I love that color red, it's almost the exact same shade I have on my '73 Triumph Spitfire. Looks really nice, especially in good sunlight. Be careful installing them back on the bike, fresh paint can scratch easy. Ohh and be careful filling with gas

Rattle can clear fogs almost everytime. But goes way after it cures.
Looks good!

Looks really good. Nice job. Yep, almost every rattle can clear I've done fogged up, then went away when cured. I think it has something to do with the propellents in the can.

thanks guys! im glad i got your opinions and input.. the first 3 times i did my tank were horrible, this is the first time i dont have cracks, bubbles, and disgusting mistakes everywhere (one time i tried to scratch a fly out of the wet paint, another i just left the fly in there LOL)... i cant wait till i ride this baby slow :) the color in itself it will certainly make me think twice about being a menace since it is going to be a serious eye catcher...

Leave them in. Like mosquitoes in pancakes, it's a character thing.
He'll wet sand right out anyway when you get to that point..

Nah, let er rip. You know you're going to.

hahhaha you know me bit TOO well! i just found out today without my winshield today my bike most certainly hits 120 with ease, wheelies are friggin awesome now that the bikes red, the bike has never run this good EVER, im glad i got to fix all the disastrous electrical/mechanical problems the bike first had because now the bike RUNS as good as it looks, guages dont flicker anymore at top speed or anything.. thanks to everyone in this forum, the man upstairs :p, and hard work.

so today when i go to get my inspection done these russian guys (im not trying to be racist) i found out later laughed when my good friend asked about my paint job (he didnt see it himself). i honestly think they were just jealous of the fact they would never be able to ride this bike and look good. what do you guys think? its okay to be honest (sorry i used a phone camera) and please i am open to suggestions to changes that you think would look nice on the bike. (btw no crease on the tank i left it sitting in the sun all day yesterday and today i left a micro-cloth inbetween the seat and tank- all is well)

should i paint the chain guard red or just get rid of the darn thing?

Yeah, loose it!
The red paint will really pop with chain lube and black crap all over it.

Leave it black and leave it on. You don't want chain lube getting on ya. The bike looks good, but are you going to pinstripe it or anything? Needs something.

Hey nice work! I too will be starting my 3rd or maybe 4th painting of my tank. I hope duplicolor clear works out for you. I think that is what I used the first time around and it turned out not to be gas proof.

Old zooks look great in red!

Cheers,
Lyle

hm i know it does need something i think i need some black on the red since there is so much black on the bike (frame, seat, guages, etc.)

thanks and thank you all! i learned my lesson before with cheap clear coats on the tank in a very fashionable way last year, i used about 2 coats of dupliclear and a whole can (3 coats) of 2k clear in a can which is good stuff, the tail piece and side covers i used regular duplicolor clear... btw i just micropolished my clutch and points cover.... beautiful! i cant believe how good they came out and i kinda rushed em too -ill take pics tomorrow (not as good as steve's ill tell you that much:)) , any tips on how to sand/get in the weird hard to reach places? (grooves etc.) pencil-eraser? i find it pretty impossible to get some areas
