Torque specs for cams?

I haven't gotten my manual yet (in the mail). Could somebody please tell me the torque specs for the head bolts and the cam hold downs? It's for a 1983 GS750T 4 valve. I just replaced the head gasket. Help?
Thanks.

if im not mistaken, they're all in inch/pounds...which unless you have a inch pound torque wrench, does you no good. Tighten them till they stop, then another half turn.

Yup...use your built in torque wrench...lol. I have removed both a couple times now, and never had a leak issue. Just do your best to get them tightened evenly.

Thanks bud.

Some creative searching on the net found this:

Cam holders: 6-8.5lb/ft
Head Bolts: 29lb/ft (upper limit)

I dont think thats right man. Someone ran into this same problem, and over torqued his valve cover and mangled it. I think that should actually read in inch pounds. thats alot of force..29 ftlbs

OHH my bad youre talking about the HEAD bolts...DOH i was thinking valve cover bolts...that IS probably right then. Sorry

Whoa, maybe I'm misreading this.

You're talking about cylinder head bolts right? On my '79 850 they are 26 foot pounds, and later models had a torque spec. quite a bit higher than that. Make sure you get the right spec. and also make sure you torque them down in the proper order.

Also the cam "hold downs" (different from the cam cover) need to be torqued very accurately and carefully. The spec. for my bike was 6 foot pounds, but again, yours might be different. Watch that you torque them down evenly, drawing the cams into position keeping everything as level as possible.

Also keep in mind that each cam hold down usually has a letter that corresponds to the same letter on the head to insure correct placement. Also special bolts are used to hold these down.......make sure you use them.

Make sure you know your proper cam timing procedure, etc., or you could be in big trouble.

Having written this: You might want to make sure you have your manual on hand BEFORE you begin this job!

Unfortunately too late for that :(

1 broken cam bolt for the hold down... Yes its in the head and no, not from over torquing but from a weak bolt. Sighs.. To be continued Saturday.

That is rough bro :( If ya need anything, i have a 80 16v motor sitting here with no use to me. Cams are shot, top end stopped getting oil, dunno why, i didnt own it then, but so far everything else looks to be in good shape.

Thank you bud. I am just so tired at this point.

Installed a new stator, used Katana coils, head gasket and battery today.
Okay so that was all the good...

Then I watched my friend destroy the tachometer (yes he broke the glass) and then he broke the head off the screw into the head. I can't believe this... Gonna clear my head for a day or two. This resurrection is starting to taking to take a toll on my heart. :(

I feel ya bro...i just tore my running (but not great) bike apart to the frame for the winter. Its ALOT of work, and it seems like i find MORE every day, but i keep it up , cos in the end, ill have the bike that i want :) Chin up bro, you'll knock it out.

............ This resurrection is starting to taking to take a toll on my heart. :(

Hang in there, I just spent a year tearing one apart & putting it back together. There were many, many days I didn't even want to walk past the dang thing....
Believe me, the day you look at it and say "Okay, I'm done" and you can step back and enjoy your hard work, it will all be worthwhile.

Then you can figure out what your going to do next.... I don't have 50 miles on mine yet and I'm already planning another motor! \\:D/

Sorry no manual yet. Paypal sent you a tracking number, right?
If you need any head parts let me know. I have springs, keepers, cam cover bolts, rockers ect......
I also have some extra tachs. Probably not the right one though.

Thank you Chef. You guys are right, it will get better (I hope 8-[).

In the meantime it's nice to have an understanding ear and support. Thank you.

Mark,
I meant to ask you... What makes the bolts unique?
