Track Stories 08

One other thing to mention. It would be interesting to see the boost versus distance. In that last run you made Saturday you can see that your staying in the groove and just past the tree where you would normally come up, this is where the tire goes up in smoke. The azz then starts to slide and you shoot to the right and abort. Should not have let you make that run but everyone needs to experience the Martin dew factor at least once. LOL.

Can you send me the text data for those runs?

well my first stage of boost was the 8lbs off the gate.. and the front was coming up before I ever shifted into 2nd... and lookin at the logs it was building boost according to the AMS settings entered.. but it dont' show you distance into the run only timing and at what rpm... but sure I can send you those files.. not sure how to turn the Microtech files into text files but I'll see if it offers an export function.

yeah the track def got damp.. although last year it seemed like my best runs at 131 were always after dark :p I should have known as well but was kinda hopin the slight loss in traction would give me a clean run since that seems to be the routine of it lately LMAO

wow those look horrid... on my part... I'm all up in the air body and head as well as teh front wheel... LOL.. gotta get rid of my KBC and get one that don't compress as easily and fits better... :(

You're def right about seein the tire smoke on the evenin pic where the front usually was popin up at... cant' wait to show Nem the clip and see what he thinks... thanks again for the videos.. my girls were too far away or not at the right angle to get me any useful footage this time around :o

Just curious, why don't you run a wheelie bar on the Busa?
Not that I know any better just wondering.

Respect! :D

Prostreet Shootout Class don't allow wheelie bars.. but even if they did I probably wouldn't.. that's the appeal to me with this class is it's not as easy to go fast as a bar class ;)

Yea I try to capture everyones best side. Videos never lie.

Yes, a text file is what I am looking for. Or just send me the files and I will handle the rest.

I get that the WG has an 8 lb spring and that you can add to this amount. What I want to know is what is the boost doing in those first 20 feet?

I have no idea what is really going on and am just tossing out ideas. Let me show you a couple of simple examples using the Martin dew factor....

Top plot is crank speed in RPM, center is boost in PSIG. There are two cursors, one set at 0.78 seconds, the other at 1.050. The graph starts when I release the bike. Notice that in this example I am not even making any boost until 0.1 seconds. We can see how the tire has started to spin and we are on the rev. limiter about a quarter second into the run. There is not much of a load so little heat and little boost. It flattens out to about 6PSI until the second cursor. This is when we grab second gear. I don't have auto (transmisssion) and my auto (controller) is smart about how to handle tire spin, so we shift.

This data was taken before I started using the Ward pickup so interesting that as the speed drops, the oil pressure cuts out as the oil moves from the back to the front of the motor. Crazy it gets air in the system this quick.

After the shift, the shaft speed drops and the tire starts to grip. Now we have some load and some heat and some more boost. We jump from 6 to 9 PSI. If you look very careful at the crank speed at the very end you can see it jump again as the tire lets loose and again the boost drops. If we continued down the graph, you would see me pull an E and abort the run.

I do not have all that fancy stuff you have to control the boost. I have a WG and that's it. For this run, I have the gate set close to 18 PSI but it never comes close to it.

/nTire spin example with shift and loss of oil pressure.

In this example, some mods have been done to the bike. The clutch is set soft, too soft.
Notice how the motor lugs down as the clutch is released. There is no tire spin up to the first shift. Notice how the boost is a nice slow rise to 8PSI. After the shift we have a bit more load and it starts to rise to 13 PSI. If you see where the second cursor is, the clutch is now at 90% lock and the boost at 10PSI when the tire does just a little hop. Again, the wastegate is not even coming into the picture yet. It's just slowly building boost as it moves down the track. Back then I would not make "full" boost until 3rd gear or so. It is almost like the wastegate is not linear with pressure. So it gets to 80% pretty fast, then slowly creeps the rest of the way.

/nslow clutch lock. some tire spin.

You may have a lot less lag and build more boost on the line but I wonder if the bike is really launching at 9PSIG or is really at 9 just past the tree where the front end starts to lift? I am guessing (pure guess with no data to back it up) that you are seeing the turbo reach its setpoint and the clutch reach 100% lock around that part of the track. The only cure I see is adjust the chassis or drop the boost just enough to keep it under control.

We were at the end of what could be done to the chassis adjustments, so I would change that spring out.

See what Nem has to say. Your guys are really the experts. I would like to hear what they have to say about it.

There is a DVD in the mail. You should have it by noon.

Back to the beater bike...

That Garrett is a heavy monster. I plan to hang it something like this rather than use the compressor bolts. Had not planned to use the oil feed bolt holes anyway. /n
I have been sitting on the bike and it will have the same problem as the flag bike. The pipe and intake will be at my knees. I may just put a few layers of wrap on it rather than to put a heat shield on. I looked at moving the pegs back further but it just doesn't feel good.

It's another full weekend of racing. We are back to a two bike team. I may ride my bike to the track if the weather looks good. It's a nice ride when you take the back roads up.

Got a little more done on the junker since last post. Put the shift light in, made up all the oil and fuel lines and routed the nitrous lines.

Still not sure on the heat shield. Looked over some of the OEM ones you can buy for the Harley's and some of the street bikes. Can't find anything that looks like it would be a good fit. Most look like some cheap stamped out junk. I may make one.

Nothing much left to do except wait for the electronics and adapters to show up.

Good luck to everyone running this weekend.

Got the bike back together and running. Weathers gonna be hot, but it looks like no rain.

Stay safe and have fun this weekend.

Go get them Ryan, you got alittle catching up to do !!

First run of T&T was my best so far. Had a 1.55 60ft, 4.15 330ft and a 6.35 ET running no bars, no lockup and no nos. Never 60 that good without bars before.

There must be a Harley God cause I put on my longer HD chrome foot pegs on the GS and I breaking all my old records

I was surprise I did that good. Now I can shoot for a high 1.4

I was running 13 psi in the slick and now wondering how a shinko would do ??

Shifted great. Went 4 rounds for the win. Beat #2 in points in the third round. That was a big round win for me. I was up by 6 going into this weekend. This puts me up by 8 with 2 weeks to go. Seems like 1 round win would clinch it for me.

In time trials bike went 9.463. 9.466. amd 9.467. Round #1 9.47, Round #2 9.45, Round #3 9.43, and in the final a 9.41. During the day the DA was 3900. In the final it had dropped to 2900.

GREAT job Ryan! Congrats on the win! Does your helmet still fit?!! LOL!! I'm just kidding, you have always seemed very humble! Congrats again! Ray.

WOW! Had a great return to the track yesterday....:D

Bike ran great...9.17-9.20 all day....and I runnered up in Pro400...
Coulda won it all, but I was dead late on the tree in the final...

Also got to meet DreamRyder.....which was a pleasure...

Headin' back for day two in a few....This racin' stuff is fun...:)

It was good to meet you as well.. .def a good weekend :p well Sat wasn't the greatest BUT Sunday def topped it off well ;)

Thanks to Nem's help I hit 7.99 today after a long weekend of yet more wheelie after wheelie..

Sat I had made 4 passes all wheelies all 8.55 runs... then Buz and Nem switched out my 8# spring on the Gate to a 5# because we couldn't take any more boost out of first as it was... and we'd done suspension, clutch, my launch style tons of variable that NONE made a difference.. finally last pass of the day after the spring change I made a pass where teh front stayed down.. dont' recall what happened during the rest of the run but it was still only like an 8.4 run...

my zip tie I put on the shock also showed I was bottoming out big time early on on Sat... after the adjustments it was only traveling about midway to 3/4.. seemed to be doing well...

nem busted his ass to put my new rear tire on and change out my spark plugs early sunday AM

Sunday started out great.. 8.03 first qualifying pass 8.09 second qualifying pass.. put me 3rd in the ladder (my sixty's were way down however 1.4-1.5's)

first round of eliminations my person I was suppose to line up with had hurt his motor so I ran alone.. dont' ahve my slip with me to look but it was a lil wheelie that I got off the gas and back on.

Nem checked my clutch stack height and it was off.. so had to rush to get that thrown back together...

went back up to line against Kent Stoz's kid... I had a decent chance if I ran an 8.0 again with a perfect tree... so I tried to not sleep on the tree along with remembering all the new stuff I had to do with preloading the clutch lever and launching at a softer rpm.. I didn't cut a good tree but way better than his LOL... his .4 to my .2 I was out of there BUT by mid track my bike lost boost and I slowed down so bad it was sicking he flew past me like I was sitten still... I didn't know what happened so I tried to stay on it and only got an 8.4 to his 7.8

turned out my up-pipe come apart and I lost all boost from 2nd or 3rd gear on...

I was out.. and he was dayum lucky cuz I had him with that tree leave and on a good run my sixty was in the 1.30's so it would have been a good number...

so Nem fixes my up-pipe and we manage to squeeze in one last run for the day and had a sweet launch wheel came up I short shifted and continued the run to get my 7.99 pass with a 1.38 sixty foot time.

My best sixty for the day was a 1.35

now if this setup would just work for all tracks I'd be set

THANK YOU NEM.... couldn't have done it without you.. and sorry your motor was hurt .... (if it wouldnt had been for his not racing I dont' think we'd been able to get the wheelie problem fixed this weekend for me to see the 7's) - it took ALOT of his time and energy to get my bike situated
E.
and no there was no video of any of our runs this weekend.. we were all busy with racing that nobody got any footage.

Way to go Bob! I hope you do well today too! Let us know when you get home, Ray.

Not so good....:D
Two good qualifying runs...qualified #5...but first round I let myself down.
In the right lane there is hole about 20-25ft out, just the right size for your wheelie bar wheel to drop into...which shoots you left or right depending which wheel...
I know about it, I know how to line up to miss it...
But I just plain forgot...
Hit it and short shifted when the bike jumped left....lost almost 3 tenths...
Oh well...still a good weekend...

...BUT by mid track my bike lost boost and I slowed down so bad it was sicking he flew past me like I was sitten still... I didn't know what happened so I tried to stay on it and only got an 8.4 to his 7.8

Ah....I was wondering what happened. Greg and I were standing there rootin' for ya...
Still...you're gettin' it together....:)

See ya next month...

Not so good....

yeah it was a sad sad loss... when I saw how much of a head start I had on him I figured OH YEAH THIS RUN FEELS GOOD I GOT IT.... just goes to show ya anything can happen...

I got my slips scanned from Sunday to show there is lot's more to be had with this thing but I'm kind of limited at the moment still with my suspension travel.. but we'll take it as far as we can...

E.

the solo pass I got out of the groove and lost traction and down track as well... the other pass was where I lost boost after 2nd gear. I just realized those two ET's are the same LOL

2008Aug24badruns.jpg

no wheelie but still very lil boost early on and a lil more at the end..
this was my best 60 foot ever... hope to see more of these combined with the better second half of that 7sec run

2008Aug24Dreamryder803run.jpg

same setup - just workin on preloading the clutch some with the bad hand it's very hard to control the middle range area

2008Aug24Dreamryder809run.jpg

a lil more boost at the end I think he gave me - but with a lil wheelie by the tree that I short shifted to get out of to continue the run...
