    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Can you split cases without removing the block in order to keep the upper engine intact?

I was wondering if you could do this to get at the transmission and avoid the expense and hassle of complete dis assembly.

Someone has a Madura that will not shift into third.
 
I've heard it can be done with a GS engine, but I'm not sure about a Madura.
 
It It looks doable but I fear the dreaded hidden bolt that nullifies all the effort.
There is a Madura and a V4 oriented forum but it seems that liquid cooling and hydraulic lifters have dulled their senses.

I do not see any teardowns so hell these bikes may be wonderful.
Apparently the big ones share an engine design with the Cavalcade.


There is one for sale at 500 negotiable and it looks clean.
The owner clearly states it has no thrird gear so at least there is some honesty.

I cannot see some kid thrashing one of these about.

The transmission in the 650 shaftie has a modified power path I assume all shafties have similar layouts. I wonder is third a weak spot in all such designs.

Oh well off to make friends with some V4 lovers I guess.
 
I did it with my GPz this year. There was a middle shaft that had to be pulled first. It was still a PITA, but better than removing the top end first. I know its not a Madura, (some say it is a GS, or the GS is it ;) ) but I suspect the concept may be similar AFA a motorcycle transmission is concerned.
 
You can work on the transmission on most motors with horizontally split cases without disturbing the top end, but if you've taken it that far and it has a few miles on it, you might as well bite the bullet and strip the top end to at least replace seals/rings.
