A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Trouble finding fuel filter.

So I'm very new to motorcycles, both riding and working on them, however I have a bit of experience working on cars. So I just bought an 82 GS and I am trying to go through the bike and assess/tune it up. This site, and all of our members have been very helpful so far, as I've learned quite a bit by reading other posts. However I have some very basic questions that I cannot find addressed in other threads.

I decided it would be wise to replace the fuel filter, as it always is when buying a used vehicle. However I cannot find where the fuel filter is, or if there is one. I took the fuel tank off last night (thank god I did, I cleaned it out and it was disgusting) and removed the petcock, and there is a filter on the inside of the tank that is attached to the petcock. It is about four inches long and has 6 or 8 little screens on it. Is this the fuel filter? Or should there be one between the petcock and the carbs? Do I need to just put one in the middle of the fuel line?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

And by the way, I found a link from this site to owner's manuals and I found one for the 1982 GS850G. Will this manual suffice for the 192 GS850L?

Thanks.

There is no other fuel filter on your bike and technically shouldn't be beyond what's already attached to the petcock. Many people have had problems using them with the way our carbs work.

Welcome to the site and Basscliff will be along later. Yes, that manual will work for your bike.

Thank you Cowboyup

Thank you Cowboyup

That was really quick. Thanks for helping out, It was really bothering me that I could not find anything on fuel filters. And I didn't want to install an additional filter if it can retard fuel flow.

An extra fuel filter may retard fuel flow. The one on the petcock is all you need, provided it's intact.

Any 850 manual will work. All the engine/maintenance stuff is the same. :)

Hi Mr. Zach,

If your carbs and tank are clean, there is really no need for any additional inline fuel filter beyond what is on the petcock. You'll find a full service manual for your bike on my site too. Check the supplements in the back for your particular year and model.

Anyway, let me dump a TON if information on you and share some GS lovin'. :D

I just stopped by to welcome you to the forum in my own, special way.
