    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Trouble removing carb GS425

Hi,

I know I'm missing something. I've been following the Clymer's manual but can't for the life of me get the carbs loose. Took the tank off, removed the throttle cable. I got stuck removing the air filter housing, though. There were some phillips screws on the upper and lower inside part of the housing that I removed. Removed the battery, but there are still a few electrical goodies strapped to the housing. Should I remove them too? I can't get the housing out, and therefore can't get the carbs back enough to slide off the boots to the air filter. Does anyone with my bike know what I'm missing? I don't want to mangle anything up. I'm not new to rebuilding carbs and I know I must be missing something small.
 
I'm not familiar with your model, but on some GSs it helps to slacken the inner part of the rear mudguard (fender), and undo the air filter housing where it's bolted through the frame. You can then move everything backward an inch or two.

The air filter housing is connected to both the electrical components and the battery casing. I think I have to take it all off. Stripped two screws today - waiting on a drill and screw extractor before I continue :(

Stripped screws in what? Screw extractors are bogus, they don't come with screw extractor extractors.

There are better ways.

Stripped two screws on the battery housing (connected to the air cleaner housing) and one screw on the other side, connected to some electrical part. Tried PB Blaster, using a larger screwdriver, hammering a flathead in. Tried everything but the rubber band trick.
 
SO.

Got the screws off. For anyone reading this in the future, the easiest way to get the carbs off a 79 GS425 is to remove both the battery housing AND the air filter housing. This allows you to slide the carbs off very, very easily. Thanks!
