OK I'll start by giving some history first

Bike had been sitting for about 10 years here is the setup it had in it:
82 GS1100E
PODS -- no name brand
Kerker Megaphone
Stock Needles 3rd from top
Diaphragm drilled out
160 air jet (stock is 170)
Pilot jets set to 3 1/4 turns
165 main jet --- Freaking huge
Pilot Jet #45 -- stock
What's been done and the configuration it is in now:

New rings with stock pistons ... professionally honed on a machine
valve job
all valve clearances set to .005"
New K&N PODs
Same Kerker Megaphone exhaust
Carbs dipped and the tutorial followed very closely
Carb plugs new OEM
Gaskets new OEM
Bench sync
Floats set
Pilot Jet #45 -- stock
new carb boots
Dynojet Kit--
Dynojet needles 3rd from top
138 mains
160 air jet
New Plugs
New Coil wires
New plug caps
Electrical connections all cleaned with Deoxit D100 and Charging Well

I have it idling but it is very rough and adjusting the pilot screws doesn't seem to do much. For example I have turned #3 carb from all the way closed to 5 turns out and I can't hear much difference (Yes it's firing all pipes are hot). If I try to give it any throttle at all it stalls right out. It also pops a lot. Any suggestions on what I should do next?

Thanks,
Dave

set the mixture screws using the highest RPM method as best you can... then do a good carb sync...

what notch are the dynojet needles set at?

Needles are set at the third notch down

That is what I am thinking will fix my idle issue. Do I need to raise the needle to make it richer to solve the stalling when giving it throttle issue?

Well, I can tell you what my '81 1100E is set at for reference, with 4:1 exhaust & K&N pods:
138 DJ mains
DJ needles at 3rd notch from BOTTOM
170 air jets
47.5 pilots
mixture screws between 2.25 - 2.50 turns.
Runs pretty much like a raped ape & idles well at 1K.

A good carb sync will fix a lot of issues once you're dialed in pretty well with the basic settings...

Were the 47.5 pilots stock or did you have to go up a size? Mine are stock at 45. I should add that info along with the needle setting to my first post .........

You know I doubt you are as dumb as me but when I turned my screws on 2 of mine all the way in after cleaning I apparently turned em too tight and broke the needle on the mix screw when backing them back out. It didnt even feel too tight when I backed em out. It took me a day to figure out what the hell I did wrong. Just thought I would throw that option out there..

The stock pilots are 45, I bumped it up one size to 47.5 based on Chef's recomendation at the time... you drilled the slides ?

I have been very gentle turning them but I did check them anyway and they are fine. Thanks for the tip. :)

Check for a good spark and good voltage at the coils.
V&H recommended a 47.5 pilot jet for my 4-1 on the 1100

OK I found the issue with the rough ****ty idle, I'm surprised I was able to get it to start at all, the throttle cable was way too tight and was giving it partial throttle.

It would still stall/bog when I would blip the throttle so I kept turning out each pilot screw a 1/2 turn until it went away. Now it's fairly smooth! I should be in the ballpark now to set the final position with the highest idle method. I think I'm around 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 turns out, Is that OK or should I switch to a 47.5 pilot jet and then redo the pilot screws? I will not be able to take it fro a ride until I have time to finish rebuilding the front master cylinder, hopefully this weekend!

@rapidray ... yes the float heights were set.

@gearhead13 spark appears to be strong, I have yet to check the voltage at the coils and will put that on my to do list. All my wiring was cleaned and the female fastons going to the coils were replaced.

Thanks,
Dave
