A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I started taking stuff off to adjust my valves last night
took the valve cover off, cleaned it up, took the breather off, cleaned that up, tach gear out cleaned with new seals, checked the clearances they are to tight, of course i couldnt find my box ended 9mm, only an open ended, so i couldnt crack em loose

i took the filter out and noticed it is a UNI filter

what is the maintenance procedure for this?

is it like my K$N in my jeep?
i take it, hose it out, then i let it soak in a 5gallon bucket with some joy soap to break up the oil and what have you
then hose it out some more
let it dry over night
spray with the k$N oil and install

same thing?
can i use the K$N oil? should i use something else?

oil it

oil it

wash it with solvint or soap and water, let it dry out. and coat it with light oil. i used to put light motor oil or ATF in my palm and rub the oil onto the foam. do not over do it. this is a very popular filter for off roading .

you could put a light coat of grease around the boarder of the filter to give it a ''seal'' i agree with notabiker

foam filters need a foam filter oil. back when I rode a bike that had a foam filter the manual said to put motor oil on the filter and to squeeze it to make sure the oil worked through evenly and to get the excess oil out.

I used a foam filter specific spray that was sprayed on and it semi dried to a realy tacky film.

PJ1 foam filter treatment can get it at any motorcycle shop that deals with dirt bikes as foam filters are still common on dirt bikes.

Wasn’t there a thread on this exact same topic yesterday?

The factory service manual calls for solvent to clean the filter, and motor oil to retreat the foam after the solvent drys. In my experience this procedure works well. Using fancy air filter oil is fine but I don't think it provides positive benefit. Regarding washing the filter in soap and water instead of solvent, solvent will strip the old oil out of the filter more effectively. If someone chooses to use a water based cleaner, something pretty strong like Simple Green would seem to be a good idea.
