upgrading my stock 83 gs750e rims to new wider rims

i have a 1983 gs750e that is really nice looking but i think i am in need of a new set of wider rims. I have seen people on this site that have newer gsxr rims that are wider. I can't seem to find any information on this procedure, what parts are needed, where to get them, how much $ etc. any of this info will really help me out. The bikes i have seen have looked as if the have diffrent front forks, so i am assuming thas a givin but how was this done will only certain forks work with my bike? There is a picture of it in the "pics of E's" post on page 12.

Ebay is your friend!! :-D 86-88 gsxr's are "1st generation", and 89-92 are
"2nd generation". I would recommend that you stay away from '87-88 gsxr750 forks, as they are the shortest forks made for the gsxr's, and there will be serious ground clearance issues for your bike. Lots of guys have done the gsxr mods (including me), and I'll recommend it highly. The ability to run radial tires and modern 4 piston brakes has really transformed the way the bike handles. I am very pleased with how my project has turned out! Will try to post up some pics....was supposed to do so today, for PJ (80GS1000), but never got a hold of the guy I was supposed to borrow the camera from.....

I think I already know the answer to this, but I'll ask anyways out of curiousity.

I have a '83 gs650g Shafty. Is it possible to get a wider rear rim on this bike.

Most of the time a wider rim will make the bike handle worse not better. The bikes geometry was designed with that tyre size in mind. Wide tyre does not necessarily mean better handling.

Correct to a point- Changing the Complete Suspension System and so the Geometry will change too, for the better if done right.

a) Changing to a wider rim that will fit a 180/55/17 in the rear.

b) changing to modern front forks (upside down as an example) and fitting front 120/70/17 in front.

Raising the rear say 1/2" - 1", will make the bike dive into the corners better.

That combination will net you a happier experience on your scooter guaranteed.

Complete system upgrade is the best way/

If it's strictly wider rims you are looking for you can use 84 1150 rear = 3.0 " rim & 85-86 1150 rear=3.5 " rim. Bolts up as stock. Unless of course you want to go mod crazy, then disregard the above:wink: I do not know off hand the front dimensions.

I have found a site www.robwilton.com and there is a guy who specalizes in early katana 1100 mods and he has much useful info on his site and he is a great help with questions. Can i make a stock gsxr750 swingarm fit on my bike its from a 95.

Trying to get a 5.5" gsxr rim from 89-95 on my 83 gs750e. i have a 95 gsxr750 rear swing arm, and a 92 katana 1100 swingarm setup to choose from, any idea on which is the better one the 95 seem to have extra support on the top.

On Wilton's site, he shows several Kats with 2002 Bandit swingarms. All of them are dual shock. Are there any aluminum, dual-shock swingarms that will fit a 1981 GS750E? I don't know what mods he made to mount the Bandit arm, but he has one on an '82 Kat, and I thought those were originally monoshock. I also wouldn't mind if the swingarm was an inch or two longer than stock and allowed for a wider rear tire.
