using hand controls from a different bike on the GS?

ok so here's just a question/rant thread. So I got my bike back together recently and I'm loving it. There are quite a few areas that still need work and one of the things I don't like about my bike or the GSs are the hand controls. I had a 99 shadow before i got my gs and i loved everything about those controls, also i've ridden a 90s ninja and a blackbird and didn't have any complaints with those controls either. I've gotten used to the hand controls but will probably hate them once again when i get my new bike this next weekend.

My biggest complaint is the left hand controls on the GS, I don't like how it handles the turn signals. I much prefer the click down to cancel the signal rather then trying to move the switch back to center, i hate the auto cancel feature which may be good for highway riding or people who are forgetful but it sucks for city driving especially when traffic is being retarded and slow, flipping on the brights is kinda awkward but isn't a huge deal for me at the moment because my brights don't work on my bike and its not because the bulb is burned out and the horn button is too small and too high up in comparison of where the turn switch is located in my opinion.

I'm not a fan of the mirrors that i have on my bike, not sure if they're stock, they do however screw into the controls. until i fixed them good recently they always got loose and pointed at either my groin or the sky. they're also big and ugly. I'm probably going to replace them with bar end mirrors.

I can't complain about the right hand controls because they do what they're supposed to do and you don't need them while riding, the brake lever tho is somewhat retarded in how they handled the brake light switch which also doesn't work on my bike at the moment. that part wasn't such a big deal until my rear brake pedal fell off of my bike while i was on the highway...

So i'm wondering if i could get some newer controls from whatever bike that would fit the 7/8th bars and splice/plug them into the electrical system, or will they have different resistances across their switches and crap that would make it a pain in the butt for electrical work?

has anybody grafted on new controls to these old bikes?

also I'd like to replace the master cylinder but i'd have to also replace the calipers to match, correct?

it sounds you dont like your gs very much... why not just ride your new bike :-s

You can use any controls you wish as long as you wire them up properly.

well, not to nit pick, but you shouldn't have ANY resistance over the switches. i used a left hand control from a 79 kz400 and the right hand electrics from an after market source, both worked fine.. you just need to know what wire is what from your bike to that one.

as far as a master cylinder goes, they make a few universal aftermarket ones, i would think as long as the threaded outlet for the hose is the same size. I don't see why they wouldn't work, unless they were very undersized?

Concerning your master cylinders: Yamaha, Honda & Suzy all use a different size or type of thread. The banjo bolts won't interchange. However, you can slide your hoses (Suzy) over the banjo bolt of another type machine. You can use the master cylinders from other machines as long as you have the original banjo bolts to connect your hoses to the master cylinders.

actually the more that i work on my GS the more that i like it... so I'm prettymuch stuck with it for a while. It has lots of power, handles quite good, is going to look really nice when i'm finished the body work, has been pretty reliable and has a giant beefy looking engine. my biggest gripe with it is the hand controls and then maybe the huge speedo cluster but all that will get sorted out with time.

thanks for the info guys!
interesting on the master cylinder part, i thought that each master cylinder would have a different amount of fluid that they displaced and wouldn't work that great with different calipers

I got an all metal after market master cylinder on ebay. I can probably find the info if you're interested. MUCH nicer than stock. I still need to replace the lines with separate lines (looking at Galfer metal lines)

After the left hand controls shorted out on mine, I replaced them with the controls from a parts '78 Honda 1000 Goldwing that I've got. They work fine, but it took some time comparing schematics between the two to make them work properly. Happy to say, they work fine now, but I think I remember putting a real thin shim under the front clamp (I think it was worn from being loose on the Honda).:-D

I'm interested in the metal MC

I am interested in info for that my plastic one is falling appart and I would not mind swapping it out with something better... that and I need to get new SS lines.. my rubber ones I think have had it and need to go.. though I will try to get the air out of that splitter in the front to see if that fixes it up as well while I wait to do that supposedly that place it imfumous for hording air inside it...

I am using harley controls, levers, and switches. I picked them up on flea bay for $27.00 including the dual disc master cylinder.

Is everything a direct swap with the one for the GS1000? Same banjo bolt? Those look really nice. I also see that it has the 2 wire hookup for the brake light already wired so I'm guessing it's hydraulic. Did your mirrors screw in, or did you have to get something with a different thread? And most importantly will it work with a 750? I have the dual disk front end.

Here's the GS auction

did you get all the buttons on those/? look like they maybe missing the turn signal ones...

Interesting look though.. cept working the left and right turn signals must be interesting to wire...

those are not stock handlebars either.. interesting for sure and different look definately...

Yeah I have the buttons to go with them, bars are 1" z bars, I'm totally rewiring the bike.

that is good to know... too bad they won't work with the stockers.. they look very nice =)

I am using the stock upper clamp, just drilled them out to 1".

Drilling...eww...

Yeah I would be hesitant to do that myself... I am looking at control swaps down the road.. need a new Master cylinder, plastic is cracking and looks hidious.. though I might wait until next winter to swap that out since it works right now just does not look very pretty.

This is teh fever I think... you change one thing then you want to change a couple others then the cycle goes on...if only money was not so tight I would never stop thinking about doing other modifications =)

Though I am interested in the suzuki savage control swaps.. I think they look nice and would not cause any red flags when bolting them up.. drilling discovering new wiring colors etc...believe they just bolt straight up.
