    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hello All,

I am trying to get a 1979 GS1000E going again. I recently bought a new gas tank and petcock. No gas is coming out of the tank and, upon inspection, I realized that the petcock runs on vacuum to allow gas to get to the carbs. I have looked and don't seem to see one near the carbs. My intention is to splice a tee and connect into the petcock. Am I blind? Where is the vacuum line?

Yes, as many of you may be thinking....I'm about as mechanical as a dead chicken and truly appreciate your assistance.

If the VM carbs on your 79 1000 are the same as the VM carbs were on my 79 750, the vacuum fitting for the petcock will be on the left side of the #2 carb. It will be a 1/4" brass nipple about 1/2 long.

If you put the petcock on the "PRI" (prime) setting, then it shouldn't require vacuum to let the gas flow.

The vacuum draws off of a nipple on one of the carbs, on the set in the carb cleanup series on the main gsresources website, it's off the #2 carb (#1 is leftmost as you sit on the bike).

This view is from the engine side of the carbs, so if you can find a nipple that's on the engine side of the carbs, you may be in luck.. :)
 
Any vacuum fitting on any carb will work to operate the petcock. All the petcock wants is a vacuum source. It couldnt care less where it gets it. :-)

Hi. I have the same model.
The brass nipple that supplies vacuum for the petcock is on the left side of carb #3.
The other two nipples, on the left sides of carbs #2 and 4, are floatbowl vent nipples.
