A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

[85 700e 25k] Hi I just got done checking my valves . The tolerance is .003'' to .005'' . mine seem to be all at .003" my ? is should I leave them as they are or bring them to the middle of the tolerance . I just got a new cover gasket 42 stinkin dollars just looking for some reassurance before I bolt the cover down . Thanks Rick :)

Since they are all in tolerance, you don't HAVE to change anything, but if you do decide to change them take them toward the upper end of the range.

That will give the valves just a little more time on their seats, keeping them cool. :D

.

.003 to .005 inches? Really?

The clearances on the GS700 with screw type adjusters are .004 to .005", so at .003" are just a tad too tight. Do as STEVE suggested and open them out to .005".

I just did mine to the high end of .005". Now my bike sounds sorta like a diesel truck. Is this a bad thing ?

No, that's fine. As the valves settle into the seats the gap will close up and it will be quiet as a mose. Besides if it's at .005" then that's factory specs, and who are we to question mr Suzuki's engineers. Just ride faster and wear a helmet and you won't hear a thing.

i wouldn't touch them.
we may see another thread in a few days.....
engine running bad/making noises...
OMG..adjuster nut fell off:eek:
i believe he'll do more damage than good.
just my opinion.:)

HEY!
it happens...idiot?/?
who said that.
do some searches on this type of valve adjustment on this forum..
it has nothing to do with loose lash...those little nuts take a lot of force to keep them in place...tork wrenches won't work either.
i was just trying to save you some grief.
do as you choose.:twistedevil:

I've seen pros with their engines apart looking for that darn tappet lock nut.
It does happen.
Terry's one of the good guys. He won't walk on egg shells around you but just says things as they are.
Dig it or don't.

If they're at the bottom of the tolerance you may not have to adjust them now, but you will soon, correct? I just don't see the value in not adjusting them because of the nut issue, if that's part of the maintenance then it has to be dealt with. Maybe terry 'says it like it is' but he certainly could word it more constructively imo.

.002 is like fly poop thickness.
if he is at an "easy" .003 than life is good.
if he has to force a .003 in than...
crack em loose and adjust them to maybe a snug .006

oh,
thanks bill...checks in the mail:lol:

Thank you blowerbike thats the kind of valuable opinion I am used to getting from you . your reply's have helped me in the past . I didnt mean to get all reved up guess I took you the wrong way so I felt a little insulted . I have read a considerable amount of info on the valve adjust and visited bikecliffs site so I do have a fairly decent grasp on the process just wanted to know from those who know where would you set your valves . Thanks again 70GT:)

hi guys , new here,
i have a 82 gs 850 , bought it just recently, issue is ,low cyl pressure , runs on basicaly 2 cyl
#1 hi n miss pop out exh #2 doesnt hit all #3 runs just ok low temp, # 4 runs low temp
been reading manuel on timming this thing, guy bought it from rebuilt it said it ran but wouldnt idle ?
i cant get to idle let alone run much,
this model has elec ign, trying to see if it is in time, the crank bolt has the A mark and T mark, cannot find the aligment mark anywhere on the plate or housing to show where i should line it up with
when i get the marks to line up where i think is right ,, the cams are nowhere close to what the book says they should be,,
does someone have a diagram, with good pics i could see as the what i should see if it is positon please
if it was a car thing its a 180 out , hahah
thanks everyone

Dennis, you'll want to start your own thread so it doesn't mess up the OP's discussion much.

I would first clean those carbs thoroughly and then do a valve adjustment. Once that is done, you can properly synch the carbs and worry about your timing afterwards.
