    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Valve Cover Caps

I'm preparing to replace my valve cover gasket, its leaking, and my manual doesn't explain how to remove the valve cover caps(the 4 shiny covers). One of them is already loose.

How do I get them off?

I'm assuming it's not an 1100E since mine are held by screws that are clearly visible. How about a model?

Just commute 35 miles each way to work on California highways and they will vibrate right off! :D I only have one left now. :cry:

I *think* there is an opening at the bottom of each cap that should allow you to get a screwdriver in there to unscrew them. It looks like there are 2 screws holding each one on.

I'll double check my 81 650G when I get home (broken throttle cable) :cry:

They are a real pain to get to those screws, the easy way is to plan on checking your valve clearance,take the valve cover off, turn it upside down and you can tighten those screws.
Or do what I did, take them out and put a thread sealent on so they won't vibrate loose again.
 
I?ve replaced those Phillips screws by stainles steel Allen screws, and add some drops of Loctite threadlocker (green). :wink:
 
actually, I have the '81 S650G, you don't need to remove the covers before pulling the valve cover, as that is the easiest way to get them on and off, with the valves exposed. if you have to replace the gasket, just pull the whole cover.

while you're at it, go get some allen head bolts to replace them, and some splined lockwashers to help keep them on. put the four covers back on then reinstall the whole valve cover!
 
Ok

So if I get this right, the caps are acutally attached to the cover, so they come off when I remove it. Makes sense, but it just didn't register.
