A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

i can only get this welded right? and then i would have to repaint the cover? can i go the el-cheapo route and use jb weld?

I have used JB Weld successfully on valve covers before. Just be sure to clean it better than you would if you wanted to eat off of it, then clean it again. Carb cleaner spray and alcohol both work well to clean all the oil out of the crack. If you have room on the inside, you can lay a bead at least 1/4" either side of the crack, then use a hair dryer to heat it up. It will soften the JB so it will flow into the irregularities of the crack giving a better seal.

And don't tighten it so much this time, JB will not be as strong as the original was.

JB Weld for temporary fix but hit ebay and get a new/used cover.

well i found somebody that will weld it. hes gonna do it tomorrow(friday) and ill keep you guys updated as to what is going on.

They're different -- the 19 bolt valve cover on the 82-83 GS850 is unique.

I had a spare, but I sold it to another GSR member about a year ago...

Any of those, carb cleaner, starting fluid, kerosene, just about any solvent will do. There is a product called "Gasket Remover" that works pretty well, especially if most of the paper is gone. It's basically paint remover in a spray can.

Just don't gouge the surface up.

by clean the gasket mating head, i meant of oil, not old gaskets. sorry for not mentioning that before.:)

I have alwyas used light petroleum based clenaer varsol etc to get the bulk of heavy oil then gone to alcohol based cleaners

the latter removes all oil so you get a very clean mating surface
i soak paper towels in alcohol based brake cleaner to do it

use several pieces to sucessively remove all reidue

I never get leaks after doing this

that guy did a sweet job of fixing the crack btw

To get the RealGasket into place without getting too much oil on it, roll it up in a couple of paper shop towels, then unroll the towels on top of the engine and get the gasket arranged the way you want while the towels are still between the engine and the gasket.

Then tear the paper towels and pull them out in pieces, allowing the gasket to drop into place.

You don't need to get too obsessive about keeping everything surgically clean. You'll inevitably get a little oil on the gasket, but just wipe it off and you'll be OK. No need to start over.

I spray a little brake cleaner on a paper towel and use that to wipe off the gasket surface before placing the gasket. Just don't get any brake cleaner or any solvent on the RealGasket.

Several years ago, I quickly cleaned a RealGasket using mineral spirits, and it got... bigger. It was the same RealGasket, only two inches wider.

I said a few bad words, ordered another one, and stashed away the original. Last year, a friend's GS850 needed a valve cover gasket. I pulled out the old RealGasket just for giggles and found that it had gone back to normal! It's still on his bike, and has been through three or four valve checks with no problems.

Nowadays, I clean RealGaskets in the sink with warm water and dish soap, then pat dry with paper towels.
