    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

valve stem replacement?

i have 2 bad valve stems as the bike has sat for a long time and they both leak now.....

where can i get new ones? can i just pull the old ones and go to autozone and find a couple of replacements? or do i need to order them from somewhere?

also, do i have to take the tires off to get them out? this is the first bike i have had thats tubeless..... can i just push the tire to the side and get to them enough to unscrew them and take them out?


whats the best/easiest way to get them out?

i will be replacing at least the back tire but for now i just want it to hold air and roll easier.....

the actual rubber stem itself. both of them have a good leak... i verified with soapy water
 
i havent ever done it, but i wouldnt see why you couldnt just slide the tire over, cut the old one off with a razor, and pop the new one in place. seems logical to me. Thats what i do on cars here at the shop when the need arises
 
On a bike they normally screw on, rather than a push through rubber type. You will have to break the bead of the tire, push it to one side, and (after unthreading the nut on the outside) push it out. Installation is the opposite. I would check at an autoparts store first.
 
you have to break the bead by the valve on one side of the tire, push it over, cut the old one out and then put a new one in. I did this and replaced the rubber ones with metal ones that come out at a 60 degree angle so it is easier to put air inthe tire. Good luck, i had a heck of a time breaking the bead with the tire on the bike.
 
well thats really good news, i would rather fight it and put new ones on with the tire on the bike than have to pull the whole thing off to get to it...

mine are the screw in ones with a nut on the outside.....
 
for those of you that have replaced them, where do you get the replacements?

motorcycle shops should also have some good angle ones.
 
I've replaced several stems with just the standard pieces you get at any automotive store or even Wal-Mart - they are standard size (just get the length that will work well with your wheel).

Since yours are held on by a nut - you may indeed have tubes installed in those tires - the only time I've had those kind of stems was when a tube was installed.
 
ok, well my front tire has no tube! i got the stem out and got a new one and got it in today.... after hours of frustration. the tire is holding air right now we will see how she holds up!


the back has a tube and its leaking really bad, so i took the back tire off today....

where can i get a tube for the back tire?

help!!

I just got off the phone with 2 different garages about my bad rear tire tubeless valve stem. One garage said that they would replace it, while the second garage said they would replace it also but with an old valve stem because the correct valve stem is not made for these bikes anymore.

this second garage has a really large bike junk yard and deals in a lot of old bike parts. So my question is; are new valve stems usable on rear wheels of 1981 GS650L tubeless rims?

New stems seem to be fine in my rims. Don't know why they wouldn't be?
 
Sometimes you have to drill the hole in the rim a bit larger as most valve stems you'll find don't quite fit the hole. I've had no trouble at the local m/c shop buying overpriced valve stems that work fine after enlarging the hole. ;-)

I ended up with one that has the nut on the inside and one on the outside. The one on the outside is more convenient but doesn't look as nifty. *shrug*
 
So is there any best before date associated with stems?
How old is too old.

I figure 24 years is a tad too long?
 
I got the metal ones at O'Reilly's, chrome angled. MUCH easier to check tire pressure!
