Very Best street use Carburetors for 1983 GS1100E

batterup

Forum Apprentice
Just got an 83 gs1100e with an yoshimura pipe, has a lil trouble starting with rough idle and cruise, instead of rejetting the stock carbs i wanted to wake up the bike and make it run a little better all around.
The bike is completely stock except for the yoshi 4-1 exhaust and will be
used exclusively on the street. What are some of the best carbs money can buy for 100% street use? Mostly looking for smoothe idle, cruise, acceleration and response. The carbs dont need to be period correct.
I did some reading on some new carbs for this bike and these sets came up:

Keihin 29mm cr special
Mikuni RS34

the problem is from what ive read both the RS and the CR run a little rough under 5k rpm and great on the top end, sounds like it would be better for a track bike.

Anyone got an opinion on the very best carb for street use? Super smoothe throughout all rpms not just top end. Thanks for the help

From what I've read, Mikuni BS34 (CV) carbs are the "best" for street use. Those would be the original carbs for the bike. They might need some tweaking for the Yosh pipe you have. Other carbs will fit and work, and not be too hard to tune in, still others will be more difficult to dial in. That becomes a personal decision.

If you're interested in selling that Yosh, let me know! ;)

Well thats easy because thats whats on the bike. It probably just needs rejetting but you would think there might be better carbs 30 years later..

BS36's from an 1150 are a popular choice if driveability is important. For performance, those RS carbs are good, and I don't think they are overly difficult to tune. These would be my first choice if money isn't a big factor.

Thanks Nessism for the help, how do the RS carbs do on the street, i would like the performance gains with the RS as long as the idle and cruise at 3-4k is nice and smoothe.

Using RS34's, your idle and transition should be good. You may suffer a small decrease in fuel economy though and more induction noise at idle.;)

Flat slide carbs flow better than round slides and the throttle pumps allow ease of tuning for the transition off idle for any given performance parameters.

Tuners wanting top end performance usually fit RS38 or RS40 carbs to their highly modified engines. For them, fuel economy isn't an issue.:dancing:

The RS34s sound really good, i just hope there as nice in traffic and city driving as they are supposed to be open throttle, i dont mind the loss in gas mileage. On the ebay listing it says Push/Pull Throttle Assembly should be used..

Would it be fine without it or is it needed?

I also read this about the carbs (
And adjustable accelerator pump system helps to provide instant throttle response, particularly in the lower RPM range) Anyone know what an adjustable accelerator pump system is?
Thanks again

It squirts a shot of fuel into the carb throat to enrich the mixture when someone grabs a handful of throttle abruptly, which normal jetting typically struggles to manage due to a change in air velocity.

You should use a push/pull cable system on all manual slide carbs. They are designed this way to prevent the throttle sticking open during cold ambient air conditions (slides icing up).

Riding a bike in air temps below 5 deg F will often cause carb icing. If you've ever experienced a stuck throttle, you'll realise that it's a no brainer to fit a dual cable system as a preventative measure.;)

Adjustable accelerator pump systems allow the volume and duration of extra fuel to be altered according to the demands of the engine. Engines with large ports/big cams and huge carbs require bigger pump jets and longer pump duration to combat sudden leanness when the throttle is wacked open.

You will be able to do roll on wheelies with the Mikuni RS34s.
You can get good results with a jet kit for the BS34s.

So for an 83 GS1100e with a yoshimura header and can i definately want the rs34, not the rs36? Also with these carbs i will need to run pods right? How difficult will these carbs be as far as install? Thanks again
