If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

For 1981 GS850G. Got Vesrah gasket kit. Relating to the base gasket, there are 4 thin washers with seals that go with this gasket to be fitted to the 4 corner studs. On the stock Suzuki gasket, these are part of the gasket but are 4 loose pieces with the Vesrah. I know what is up & down re: gasket but do the washer/seal pieces go on top or under the gasket???

Thanks again,

DH

They should fit inside the gasket holes and to do this you line them up on top. A bit of spit stops them moving around.

Those seals go inside the head gasket, not on the base gasket. The base gasket is supplemented by two oblong rubber O-rings that fit in a recess around the two outboard, rear studs. There have been LOTS of reported failures of those aftermarket O-rings so I strongly suggest you throw those Vesrah O-rings in the trash and get some factory Suzuki ones.

The 4 washers are for the head gasket, not the base gasket. That is, they go between the head and the cylinders.

Lots of members here have been reporting problems with the oval-shaped o-rings that go in with the base gasket (between the cylinders and the case). Vesrah especially have failed in less than a few hundred miles. The OEM oval o-rings seal and hold indefinitely. When these o-rings fail, they blow out the base gasket, destroying it. You'll be into another top end tear down just for these o-rings. Please take the time to get some OEM oval o-rings before you put it back together.

Apologies - I didn't read the question properly and the other guys are right. Those seals are for the head gasket and not the base gasket.

Old age & ADD crash. I meant HEAD gasket so naturally I referred to Base gasket.
Thank you all for the help & advice. I guess I will pull the cylinder block to replace the 2 oblong o rings.

BUT, if the 4 corner washer/seals go on TOP of the holes in the head gasket(they don't fit in the holes fully) does the 1/2 metal-1/2 rubber side of them face up or does the all rubber side face up. If this is not clear I can get an image out to show the difference.

Thanks again,

DH

While you are at it, do yourself a favor and order an OEM base gasket as well. I just had to do a tear down on mine due to an oil leak in the o-ring area of the base. I thought the o-rings would be bad. They were fine. The Vesrah base gasket itself had swollen to the point of failure. It actually started to roll up the outside of the sleeves. I should have taken pictures. Time will tell if it was caused by something I did or used. The OEM gasket was made out of a completely different material than the Vesrah was. Just my experience based on one event so take it for what its worth.

Well I went with the OEM Suzuki Head & Base gaskets & the 2 pear shaped OEM base gasket seals.

See my post of 8-1-2010 asking for help IDing some washer/seals I found AFTER I got the head on & torqued down.
Thanks again for your help & guidance.
